COT Data Flags Record Dollar Longs as Euro Turns Bullish; Crude Softens and Wheat Shorts Crowd

The latest Commitments of Traders report points to extreme positioning in the True US Dollar Index, with large speculators at an all-time record while commercials sit at a 555-report extreme, a configuration not seen for more than a decade. The Euro reinforces the currency message: both large speculators and commercials are at a 334-report bullish extreme, a stretch covering more than six years of weekly data, and its heavy weighting in broad dollar measures links the two markets’ signals.

Elsewhere, the energy complex shows faster-moving shifts rather than long-duration extremes. Brent crude and WTI posted larger-than-average bearish weekly COT changes, while small speculators remain optimistic in both contracts. Natural gas moved the other way, recording the clearest bullish change signal in energy, with the five-year positioning gauge near bullish extremes in data back to 1995. In agriculture, Kansas City wheat reached a 156-report bearish extreme among large speculators, a build-up over roughly three years, leaving the price trend and any stabilisation key to judging whether the trade is merely entrenched or becoming crowded.

Unprecedented Currency Market Positioning and Dollar Vulnerabilities

We are looking at an unprecedented setup in the currency markets as we head into August 2026. The True US Dollar Index has just hit an all-time extreme for large speculators, while commercial hedgers have reached a 555-report extreme. This tells us the current dollar-buying trend is historically exhausted and highly vulnerable to a pullback.

This extreme positioning comes as the US Dollar Index (DXY) recently hovered around the 101 to 102 range, pressured by expectations of further Federal Reserve interest rate cuts. Historically, when commercial positioning reaches decade-long extremes like this, a multi-month trend reversal often follows. We should prepare for a potential downward dollar correction in the coming weeks by gradually reducing long-dollar exposures.

The Euro strongly supports this bearish dollar outlook, showing its own 334-report bullish extreme among both speculators and commercials. This is the Euro’s most significant bullish structural setup in over six years, occurring as Eurozone inflation stabilizes near the European Central Bank’s 2% target. Because the Euro makes up 57.6% of the DXY, we should look for opportunities to buy EUR/USD on dips rather than chasing USD strength.

Divergent Signals in Energy and Agricultural Markets

In the energy sector, we are seeing a clear divergence that traders must not ignore. Brent and WTI crude are showing rapid bearish positioning shifts, even as benchmark crude prices struggle to stay above $75 a barrel amid weak global demand forecasts. Meanwhile, natural gas is building a highly constructive, bullish structure near historical extremes last seen decades ago.

We should avoid treating energy as a single block and instead play this internal divergence. This means looking to short crude oil rallies if the bearish data persists, while preparing to go long on natural gas as soon as price action confirms the turn. Using tight stop-losses is crucial here, as speculative retail traders remain heavily long on oil and could face a sudden squeeze.

Finally, Kansas City wheat has reached a 156-report speculative bearish extreme, meaning short positions are incredibly crowded. This three-year extreme suggests that while the agricultural downtrend has been strong, the selling pressure may soon run out of steam. We should closely watch for any signs of price stabilization, as a sudden short-covering rally could trigger a sharp move upward.
