What Is an Underlying Asset?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In financial markets, an underlying asset<\/strong> is the product that a derivative contract is based on. As the underlying asset moves in price, the derivative contract mirrors that movement \u2014 rising and falling in direct response to changes in the asset’s value beneath it.<\/p>\n

Every derivative \u2014 whether a futures contract, an options contract, a CFD, or a swap \u2014 is built on top of an underlying asset. Without it, the derivative has no reference point, no pricing mechanism, and no reason to exist. It is the foundation the entire derivative structure is built upon.<\/p>\n
