What Is an Uncovered Option?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In general finance<\/strong>, an uncovered option<\/strong> \u2014 also known as a naked option<\/strong> \u2014 is a type of financial option in which the seller does not hold a position in the underlying asset. The seller has written a contract obligating them to buy or sell the underlying at a specified price if the buyer exercises \u2014 but holds no offsetting position to protect against that obligation.<\/p>\n

This absence of a hedge is what makes the option “uncovered.” The seller is fully exposed to the market, with nothing to cushion the impact if the trade moves sharply against them.<\/p>\n
