Inflation, however, is set to be the main constraint on the outlook and could prompt further European Central Bank (ECB) tightening. Headline inflation has risen from a June low of 2.8% to 3.3% in August, a three-year high, driven largely by energy while goods inflation has also picked up. ABN AMRO expects inflation to peak above 3.5% in coming months and to average 3.0% in 2026, which is 0.5pp above its June forecast, with wage growth data from Indeed and the ECB\u2019s tracker pointing to building second-round risks.<\/p>\n\n
As we digest the latest Eurozone inflation rebound to 3.3% in August, we advise derivative traders to prepare for a more hawkish European Central Bank than currently priced. With energy prices driving headline inflation toward a projected peak above 3.5% in the coming months, the risk of extended monetary tightening is rising sharply. To capitalize on this environment, we recommend shorting German 10-year Bund futures as yields, which have recently hovered around 2.45%, look set to climb higher. In the currency options market, we see a strong case for building bullish Euro exposure, particularly through EUR\/USD call options targeting the 1.11 level. The combination of resilient Eurozone growth and a hawkish ECB contrasts sharply with a slowing US economy, where recent manufacturing data has shown signs of cooling. This yield-differential play is further reinforced by the ECB’s forward-looking wage tracker, which indicates that domestic price pressures are becoming entrenched.<\/p>\n\n
For equity derivative traders, we suggest buying near-term call options on the Euro Stoxx 50 volatility index (VSTOXX) to hedge against sudden market sell-offs.
