The New York Stock Exchange opens at 9:30.

For those sixty minutes, the only equity market in the United States with a price is the futures market. Every fund manager, algorithm and retail trader who wants to express a view on what the number means has one venue to do it in, and the cash market spends the hour watching from behind glass.

That hour produces the market’s first vote on the data. It is also the vote most likely to be wrong.

The hour before the market opens

Index futures trade close to around the clock, breaking only for a short daily maintenance window. Stock exchanges keep business hours. Put those two facts together and something useful falls out: the first price reaction to any US macro release happens in a market the cash equity session cannot yet follow.

This is why the numbers on financial news at 8:45 a.m. New York time are futures quotes rather than index levels. The S&P 500 index itself is not moving, because none of its constituents are trading. The futures contract referencing it is moving, and it is doing the work of telling everyone where stocks are likely to open.

The practical consequence: by the time the bell rings, the decision has largely been made somewhere else.

First reaction is not always the right reaction

Two things undermine that opening hour, and right now they compound.

The first is liquidity. Volume in the minutes around a major release is thinner than it looks, and the spread widens. Initial moves overshoot, then retrace when better-informed flow arrives. A contract can print a large move at 8:31 and give most of it back before 9:00 without anything changing about the data.

The second problem is bigger, and it is specific to this cycle. The rule most traders learned has stopped working.

For most of 2024 and 2025 the logic ran one way. Weak jobs data meant the Fed was closer to cutting rates, cheaper money was good for shares, so bad news lifted the market. Soft print, stocks up. It held often enough to become a reflex.

Now, that chain broke at the first link. The Fed has held rates at 3.50% to 3.75% since December 2025, and the argument at the September 15 and 16 meeting is whether to raise them, not whether to cut. Rate cuts are not on the table, so weak jobs data no longer buys one.

What it buys instead is a lower chance of a hike, which is a much smaller prize. And the committee is close to evenly divided on that question. Of the twelve voting members, five are seen as ready to raise rates while six want to see the inflation data first. CME FedWatch put hike odds at 50.2% on Thursday, up from 35.4% a week earlier. Governor Christopher Waller said the same day that he leans toward holding if inflation keeps moderating, but would consider a hike if it runs hot.

So Friday’s payroll report lands on genuinely undecided voters, with the August inflation print on September 11 forming the second half of their decision.

That flips the sign on everything. A hot jobs number is now the unfriendly outcome for shares, because it strengthens the case for a hike. A soft one is the friendly outcome. Anyone carrying the old reflex into Friday’s window will read a weak print as a green light when the market is pricing something closer to the opposite.

Which makes the hour worth less than it looks. If Friday comes in under 53,000 and futures slip rather than rally, the old rule says the market has misread the number. It hasn’t. It has priced weakness rather than relief, and the payroll figure on its own will not tell you which of the two it chose.

The signal is in the combination

One release does not produce one reaction. It produces four, arriving in the same minute, and each is answering a different question.

<tv-market-data symbol-sectors='[{"sectionName":"Futures","symbols":["VANTAGE:USNOTE10Y","VANTAGE:SP500FT","VANTAGE:NAS100FT","VANTAGE:DJ30FT"]}]' heatmap></tv-market-data>

The market doesn’t speak one voice

Read individually, each of these can mislead. Read together, they produce something closer to a message. The single most useful thing to watch is not direction. It is whether yields and equities move in the same direction or opposite ones.

Yields down, equities up. Policy relief. The market is pricing less tightening and rewarding it. NAS100 typically leads, because lower discount rates help long-duration earnings most

Yields down, equities down. Growth fear. The same yield move, the opposite meaning. Investors are not celebrating easier policy, they are pricing a weaker economy. DJ30 tends to lag in this case, since cyclical earnings take the damage

Yields up, equities down. Hawkish repricing. Straightforward, and the dominant pattern of the past fortnight as the 10-year climbed to 4.818%, its highest since November 2023

Yields up, equities up. Growth optimism outweighing rate pressure. The rarest of the four in a hiking debate, and worth treating with suspicion when it appears

Thursday’s session showed the first case in public. Treasury yields cooled, the 10-year easing to 4.768% after touching 4.818% earlier in the week, and all three benchmarks closed higher. The Nasdaq Composite led at 1.40%, ahead of the Dow at 1.18% and the S&P 500 at 1.06%. That ordering is the framework working as described. Rate relief arrives, the growth-heavy index takes the largest share of it, and the broad index confirms rather than leads.

The same setup appears across the data calendar

Payrolls get the attention, but 8:30 a.m. New York time is the standard release slot for most of the US data calendar. CPI, PPI, retail sales, weekly jobless claims and GDP revisions all land there. The same one-hour gap opens roughly a dozen times a month.

Know about them in VT Market’s Economic calendar.

The overnight session carries more than it used to, as well. Bond moves have been global rather than American this year, so when London and Tokyo have already repriced, futures arrive at the 8:30 print having absorbed a full session of information the cash market never saw.

What would challenge all of this

Thin-liquidity moves reverse. The advantage of the window is timing, not accuracy. A first print is a first draft.

The signal is contaminated. Yields have been moving on Iran, oil above $95, corporate issuance and deficit concerns as much as on policy expectations. New York Fed President John Williams said this week the surge reflects a strong economy rather than market dysfunction. Attributing a Friday yield move purely to payrolls is the standing trap here.

The futures level is not the cash open. Gaps get filled or extended in the first minutes of regular trading, and the opening auction brings order flow the overnight session never saw.

Sixty seconds cannot read a household survey. Participation and the revision history are where July’s report actually turned, and neither shows up in the headline number that moves the market at 8:31.

What Futures can and cannot tell you

The pre-open window is better used as information than as a conclusion. It tells you the starting assumption the market has adopted, which is genuinely worth knowing, and it tells you nothing reliable about whether that assumption survives contact with the cash session.

The cross-market read across USNote10Y, NAS100ft, DJ30ft and S&P500ft is what turns the hour from noise into a message. Yields and equities moving apart says one thing. Moving together says another. That distinction holds whether the release is payrolls, inflation or retail sales.

What the window cannot settle is the thing everyone wants settled, which is what the Fed does on September 16. With the committee split down the middle and six of its twelve voters openly waiting on data, that decision leans on the CPI release of September 11 more than on Friday’s hiring number. The first hour on Friday belongs to futures. The rest of the month belongs to prices.

Interested in trading Index Futures CFD? US economic data is often released at 8:30 a.m. New York time, one hour before cash equities open, so futures provide the first live market reaction.

What does the futures move tell you about the stock market open?
It shows the market’s first expectation for where stocks may open, but it is not always the final direction. Trading conditions are thinner around major releases, early moves can reverse, and the opening auction brings new orders that were not present during the overnight session.

Why should traders watch yields alongside equity futures?
Treasury yields help explain what is driving the move. Lower yields can support stocks when investors expect less Fed pressure, but they can also signal growth concerns if investors are worried about the economy. The meaning depends on how equities react alongside yields.

Which instruments should you watch together during a data release?
Four markets provide different signals. USNote10Y shows Fed expectations, NAS100 reflects sensitivity to interest rates, DJ30 reflects cyclical economic confidence and S&P500 shows whether the move is broad across equities. Reading them together gives a clearer picture than watching one market alone.

Why is a weak jobs report not automatically good for stocks in 2026?
Because the Fed is currently debating whether further tightening may be needed rather than focusing only on rate cuts. A softer report can reduce rate pressure, but an overly weak report can raise concerns about economic growth. The market reaction depends on whether investors focus more on policy relief or economic weakness.

Why can the headline jobs number be misleading?
The first market reaction usually focuses on the headline payroll figure, but the broader labour picture also depends on revisions, participation and the employment-population ratio. These details can change how investors interpret the health of the economy after the initial move.

Does this only apply to the jobs report?
No. The same futures window applies to other major US releases, including CPI, PPI, retail sales, weekly jobless claims and GDP revisions. These reports also arrive before the regular stock market session begins, creating the same gap between futures and cash markets.

</details>

Start trading now — click here to create your real VT Markets account.

For one hour after every major US data release, futures are the only equity market with a live price.
