Media reports that major banks have moved their Bank of Japan tightening calls to September have pushed market pricing to about 20 bp, which implies scope for further upside in expectations. Attention is also on how the BoJ frames policy beyond the September 18 meeting, with the bank\u2019s tone seen as the main swing factor for the yen and, by extension, USD\/JPY.<\/p>\n\n
We are currently watching the USD\/JPY trade in a flat range between 158.00 and 159.50 as the Yen continues to lag behind other major currencies. With the Bank of Japan’s September 18 meeting approaching, major banks are shifting their rate hike expectations to next month, yet the market has only priced in 20 basis points of tightening. This pricing gap leaves significant room for a sudden upward move in the Yen, creating a high-reward window for derivative traders. <\/p>\n\n
To put this in perspective, we saw a similar underpricing of risk in mid-2024 when an unexpected interest rate adjustment caused USD\/JPY to plunge from over 161 to under 142 in less than a month.
