RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the central bank\u2019s net-short forward-dollar position remains \u201cvery manageable\u201d, even after building a sizeable bearish Dollar stance over the past two years to support the Rupee. He reiterated that the exchange rate is market-determined and that intervention is intended to limit excessive volatility and speculative activity, rather than to target any particular level.<\/p>\n\n
Malhotra described the early closure of the FCNR(B) swap window as a data-driven calibration. He also pointed to stronger-than-expected inflows, adding that the RBI is expecting at least $80bn from recent measures to attract foreign currency, spanning FCNR(B) deposits, external commercial borrowings and overseas foreign-currency borrowings. He said the marginal benefit of each additional swapped Dollar is falling, while sterilisation costs are rising.<\/p>\n\n

With India’s foreign exchange reserves hovering near record highs of over $670 billion, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has more than enough firepower to defend the currency. This massive buffer means we should avoid aggressive bearish bets on the Rupee, as the central bank is well-positioned to cap any sudden spikes in volatility.<\/p>\n\n
Furthermore, heavy foreign inflows are continuing to flood the Indian market, bolstered by India’s inclusion in major global bond indexes which has consistently attracted billions in debt investments. We expect these steady inflows, combined with the RBI\u2019s projected $80 billion from foreign-currency attraction measures, to keep the USD\/INR pair tightly contained. Derivative traders should look to exploit this environment by selling USD\/INR call options to capitalize on the limited upside of the Dollar. <\/p>\n\n
However, we must closely monitor rising sterilization costs and the RBI\u2019s decision to scale back on dollar swaps. As swap costs rise, short-term forward premiums are likely to face upward pressure, making traditional import hedging via forwards more expensive. We recommend that traders focus on short-dated option strategies, like iron condors, to profit from the tight trading band while avoiding the rising costs associated with longer-term forward contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
