Indonesia\u2019s GDP grew 5.3% year-on-year in Q2, easing from 5.6% in Q1, yet coming in above the 5.1% market expectation. The slowdown followed the fading of one-off boosts such as Eid-related spending and the harvest season, although output still expanded faster than in 2025. On the back of stronger-than-expected H1 performance, Standard Chartered lifted its 2026 GDP forecast to 5.3% from 5.2%.<\/p>\n\n
Headwinds remain in the labour market and private-sector activity. The unemployment rate edged down to 4.65% in May from 4.74% in November 2025, but formal-sector employment fell to 40.7% of total jobs from 42.3% over the same period. The bank continues to project modest momentum, with growth averaging 5.2% in H2, while government priority programmes\u2014free meals, village cooperatives, social spending and infrastructure\u2014alongside relatively healthy household consumption are expected to cushion subdued external demand and cautious private-sector investment.<\/p>\n\n

With economic growth holding up, we expect the Indonesian Rupiah to stabilize against the US dollar in the coming weeks. Traders should consider buying short-term USD\/IDR put options, anticipating the exchange rate to hold within a steady range of 15,900 to 16,300. Historically, a positive GDP surprise in the second quarter helps shield the Rupiah from heavy capital outflows, making range-bound currency derivatives a viable play.<\/p>\n\n
However, underlying structural issues persist, such as formal-sector employment dropping to 40.7% of total jobs, which signals soft consumer purchasing power ahead. Because of this weak formal job market, we recommend that fixed-income derivative traders position for a flattening yield curve. Specifically, we suggest utilizing interest rate swaps to lock in yields, as the 10-year government bond yield is likely to hover steadily around 6.7%.<\/p>\n\n
Cautious private-sector investment will also likely limit any massive upside for local equities. We advise derivative traders to adopt a defensive stance by using protective puts on Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) futures.
