China is preparing to launch mBridge, a blockchain-based cross-border payment platform that uses wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) issued on a shared distributed ledger rather than routed as bank deposits across multiple institutions. The system is set to be backed by central banks in China, Hong Kong, Thailand and the UAE, with operations overseen by a Hong Kong-based entity. mBridge has already processed about \u00a5470 billion of transactions, while commercial banks may be allowed to access the platform under central bank supervision. Given that the US dollar’s share of global foreign exchange reserves has steadily slid to around 58% in recent years, we expect further downward pressure on the greenback. We should look to establish short-USD positions using long-dated put options, particularly against the Chinese renminbi and the UAE dirham. Hedging this exposure now is crucial as mBridge slashes cross-border transaction costs by up to 50%, incentivizing a rapid migration of corporate treasury flows away from the SWIFT network. <\/p>\n\n
The threat of dollar depreciation and the rise of alternative payment rails mean we must also re-evaluate our commodity derivative strategies. Historically, when the dollar weakens, gold and hard commodities rally significantly as international buyers find them cheaper to purchase. We should also target interest rate swaps and sovereign debt derivatives in emerging markets that are early adopters of this digital network. These nations will likely see increased liquidity and capital inflows as they bypass traditional correspondent banking networks to settle trade directly.
