The US Treasury, via the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, told a number of banks to stand ready for further action, and the pair traded just under 159.00 late in the session, about a Yen and a half below the day\u2019s start. The intraday pattern saw a drop to around 158.50 in the London morning that was quickly reversed, another move around 13:15 GMT as the Treasury headline crossed, and a later low near 158.00 in New York. Separately, IMF guidance treats up to three intervention episodes in six months as consistent with a free float, while three consecutive days count as a single episode; Japan\u2019s finance ministry said in May that, after April was counted, two windows remained before November.<\/p>\n
Japan\u2019s reserves were described as ample: roughly $1.4tn in total, with a little under $1.2tn in foreign currency assets, and the April\u2013May campaign ran about $74bn over a month. Thursday\u2019s operation was estimated near $53bn from central bank account data, driving USD\/JPY from the 163.00 handle to just under 158.00 inside an hour after GDP printed 1.5% annualised versus 2.1% consensus, into reported net short Yen positions of $11.65bn. The BoJ then held at 1.00% on an 8-1 vote, while the US upper bound was cited at 3.75%. Data ahead included Monday\u2019s manufacturing survey at 14:00 GMT with consensus 54; Wednesday\u2019s private payrolls at 75K versus 98K; and Friday 7 August NFP at 12:30 GMT seen at 91K versus 57K, unemployment 4.3% versus 4.2%, and earnings 0.3% MoM, with futures pricing at least one increase at roughly 59% ahead of 16 September.<\/p>\n

A confirmed daily close below this 158.00 floor will likely trigger a rapid liquidation toward the 155.00 zone, making short-dated put options highly attractive. Conversely, if the pair manages a daily close above 161.50, we must abandon this bearish view, as it would signal that the market has successfully called Tokyo’s bluff.<\/p>\n
We must respect Tokyo’s capacity to move markets with minimal capital, especially given their historical precedent of massive, sudden actions. For perspective, Japan spent a record 9.8 trillion yen (about $62 billion) during their April and May 2024 intervention campaign, proving they have both the will and the ammunition. By using consecutive-day operations that count as a single event under IMF rules, Tokyo can now keep traders guessing and hold the line without draining their $1.4 trillion foreign reserves.<\/p>\n
