The apparent mismatch reflects scope: GS and UBS track hedge-fund positioning, whereas BAC aggregates mutual funds, ETF flows, pensions, institutional managers, hedge funds, cash, credit and technicals. BAC’s measure is framed as contrarian, with readings above 8 treated as tactical sell signals; GS added that, after five weeks of selling, fast money may be nearing capitulation in tech rather than the wider market. Earnings to date show 86% beating on revenue and 80% on earnings, although only 27% of the S&P has reported, covering 135 companies.

Friday’s session underscored rotation. The Dow rose 236 points and the S&P 500 added 3, but the Nasdaq fell 162; the Russell lost 10, Transports dropped 102, Equal Weight gained 62, and the Mag 7 fell 27. Tech slid 1.5% as Real Estate rose nearly 2.2% and Basic Materials 2%; Consumer Staples gained 1% followed by Financials and Communications at 0.9%. Bonds steadied with TLT up 0.1% and TLH 0.2%, while the 2-year was 4.32%, the 10-year 4.69% and the 30-year 5.15%. Brent moved from above $100 to $88 and WTI from $92.40 to $82.60; gold settled at $4,052 and then rose $50 to $4,100. The VIX was 17.60, down 5%, versus last week’s 20.30 with support at 17.30. This week brings about 150 S&P reports including MSFT, META, AAPL and AMZN, a July FOMC decision on Wednesday at 2 pm, GDP expected at +2.1% plus June PCE, and data on incomes, spending, claims, the Employment Cost Index, Chicago PMI and July sentiment; overseas bourses were higher, with Germany up 1.5%, while US futures showed the Dow +500, the S&P +74, the Nasdaq +460 and the Russell +38.

Sector Rotation and Tactical Positioning

We are looking at a market that is undergoing a massive sector rotation rather than a full-blown liquidation. With Bank of America’s Bull & Bear Indicator hitting an extreme 9.6 out of 10, the warning signs of an overcrowded market are flashing bright red. As derivative traders, we must recognize that tactical sell signals are active, especially with tech giant earnings and the Federal Reserve meeting on deck this week.

This is the perfect environment to utilize options to protect our portfolios and capitalize on sudden swings. We should look at buying protective puts on high-beta tech names that have seen relentless fast-money selling, while simultaneously writing covered calls to capture rich premiums from elevated implied volatility. The VIX is currently hovering around 17.60, meaning option premiums are juicy enough to reward strategic sellers but low enough to make hedging affordable if we break key support levels.

Trading Opportunities Amid Macro Volatility

Historically, when the S&P 500 trades near major trendline resistance, like the current 7,472 level, market volatility tends to spike ahead of major macroeconomic data. With second-quarter GDP expectations pegged at 2.1% and the June PCE Price Index scheduled for release, macro traders are highly sensitive to any signs of sticky inflation. We can structure long straddles or strangles on the major indices to benefit from the guaranteed volatility expansion these data releases will trigger.

Furthermore, we are seeing capital rotate heavily into defensive sectors like Real Estate and Basic Materials, which both posted gains of around 2% late last week. We should consider bullish call spreads on these lagging sectors to ride the rotation wave while keeping our risk strictly capped. This methodical approach allows us to stay positioned in the market without exposing ourselves to the brutal intraday swings of the tech sector.

Finally, we must monitor the commodity markets as Brent crude fluctuates around $88 and gold holds its ground at $4,100. If geopolitical tensions ease further, we could see oil prices drop, which would relieve pressure on corporate margins and boost equity futures. We can play this by utilizing calendar spreads on energy options to take advantage of the shifting term structure as these global events unfold.

Start trading now — click <a href="https://www.vtmarkets.com/en-ca/trade-now/>here to create your real VT Markets account.

Hedge funds dump AI and Mag 7 as BofA indicator flashes extreme; rotation, earnings, Fed loom.

[59

post-57721","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
