Risk appetite softened as conflict in the Middle East escalated, with Oil prices jumping after attacks on Saudi tankers in the Red Sea and renewed focus on potential disruption at the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Strait of Hormuz. The US Dollar Index (DXY) rose about 0.3% to above 101.40. EUR/USD slipped to about 1.1380, down roughly 0.3%, even after the European Central Bank left its three key rates unchanged, while GBP/USD fell under 1.3320, off about 0.4%, ahead of UK Retail Sales forecasts of −0.3% m/m for June after +1.2% in May, and −0.4% excluding fuel.

USD/JPY advanced about 0.4% towards 163.85, its highest in almost four decades, as yield differentials widened. AUD/USD dropped around 0.4% to near 0.6970 despite Australian Employment rising 76.3K versus a 15K forecast and Unemployment holding at 4.4%; prior Composite PMIs were 50.4. WTI climbed more than 6% to near $92.00 a barrel, while Gold slid about 2% to around $4,050. Friday brings Germany’s GfK Consumer Confidence, seen at −28.5 versus −29.2, with preliminary July HCOB PMIs due; Eurozone Manufacturing is forecast at 51.3 and Services at 49.8. The US prints preliminary July PMIs, with Manufacturing seen at 54.5 versus 53.9 and Services at 51.0 versus 51.2, alongside June New Home Sales, while the UK also releases preliminary S&P Global PMIs.

Dollar, Yen, Oil, and Gold: Strategic Positioning

We recommend derivative traders focus on long dollar positions through FX futures and call options as resilient labor data keeps the Federal Reserve hawkish. With jobless claims hitting historical lows of 187K, US Treasury yields are poised to climb higher. This macroeconomic strength suggests the dollar index (DXY) will easily sustain its momentum above the 101.40 level in the coming weeks.

We must be highly cautious with USD/JPY long positions near 163.85, as the risk of sudden Japanese government intervention is extremely high. Historically, Japan’s Ministry of Finance spent a record 9.8 trillion yen (around $62 billion) in a single month during 2024 to defend its currency when it slid past 160. To manage this risk, we should utilize tight stop-losses or buy short-term USD/JPY put options to hedge against a rapid, intervened drop in the pair.

We suggest buying call options on West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil as geopolitical threats in the Red Sea risk choking global energy corridors. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Strait of Hormuz together handle millions of barrels of oil daily, making any shipping disruptions highly inflationary. With WTI prices surging past $92.00, option implied volatility is likely to spike, rewarding traders who position for further energy price spikes.

Despite massive geopolitical uncertainty, we favor purchasing put options on gold as the metal retreats from its $4,050 highs. Higher oil prices threaten to keep global inflation sticky, forcing major central banks to keep interest rates elevated for a longer period. Historically, rising real yields increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding safe havens, which will likely keep gold under heavy pressure in the near term.

Opportunities in Euro and Sterling Weakness

We should look to sell rallies on EUR/USD and GBP/USD using bear spread strategies to capitalize on the widening policy differences with the US. The Eurozone is struggling with weak growth prospects, while upcoming UK retail sales are forecast to contract by 0.3%. This leaves both European currencies highly vulnerable to the greenback’s dominant safe-haven appeal.

Start trading now — click <a href="https://www.vtmarkets.com/en-ca/trade-now/>here to create your real VT Markets account.

Dollar strengthens as jobless claims hit 187K; Middle East tensions lift oil, pressure euro, sterling, gold.

[59

post-57535","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
