Other low-yielding currencies have also lagged: EUR/CHF has moved back to around 0.9300, a level last seen at the start of the year. Since the US-Iran conflict began in late February, the yen and Swiss franc have ranked among the weakest performers in the G10 complex, as higher yields outside Japan and costlier energy tilt conditions against the currency.

Japanese policymakers are operating in a tougher market backdrop, as firmer global yields continue to encourage yen depreciation. Bloomberg reported that Bank of Japan officials are open to faster-than-consensus rate increases, with yen weakness feeding upside inflation risks, and MUFG expects a hike as soon as September. Even so, a single BoJ move may offer only limited relief, while the report frames a potential unwind of carry trades as more supportive should the energy shock destabilise financial conditions and push major central banks such as the Fed towards tighter policy.

Strategies For Capitalizing On Yen Weakness

We advise derivative traders to brace for heightened volatility in the Japanese Yen by utilizing USD/JPY call options to capture further upside above the 163.00 level. With Brent crude oil prices climbing back toward $85 a barrel, Japan’s heavy reliance on imported energy continues to pressure the Yen. To mitigate the risk of sudden government intervention, we recommend structuring these trades with knock-out barriers or using long straddles.

While the Bank of Japan is rumored to raise its benchmark rate in September, we believe a single rate hike will not be enough to reverse the currency’s slide. Looking at historical data, when the BoJ raised rates in mid-2024, the Yen still faced intense selling pressure because the U.S.-Japan yield spread remained above 400 basis points. We suggest buying short-term JPY put options to capitalize on this ongoing weakness while the yield gap remains wide.

Risk Management And Hedging Considerations

We must also prepare for a potential unwind of the carry trade if high energy costs destabilize global markets. If global stock markets slide, a sudden rush to cover short Yen positions could quickly push USD/JPY down toward the 155.00 support level. Traders should consider buying cheap, out-of-the-money USD/JPY put options to hedge against a sudden risk-off reversal in the coming weeks.

Start trading now — click <a href="https://www.vtmarkets.com/en-ca/trade-now/>here to create your real VT Markets account.

Oil-driven yield gaps weaken yen; USD/JPY tops 163; BoJ hike talk sparks volatility; options strategies, hedges advised.

[59

post-57485","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
