The metal traded at $4,146 after touching an intraday low of $4,076, with a softer US Dollar Index (DXY) adding support as it slipped 0.07% to 101.12. Oil jumped on the geopolitical news, with WTI up over 6% to $86.80 a barrel, while the US 10-year Treasury yield increased by nearly three basis points to 4.654%.

Rate expectations shifted as well. Money markets priced a 65% probability of the Fed keeping rates unchanged at the 29 July meeting, down from 78% the prior day, according to Prime Terminal data. Technically, gold reclaimed $4,100 and is seen testing $4,200, with the 50-day SMA at $4,253 in view; further resistance levels are $4,300 and $4,400, followed by the 200-day SMA at $4,496. On the downside, a break below $4,100 would expose $3,999 and then $3,886. Central banks added 1,136 tonnes of gold worth around $70 billion to reserves in 2022, according to the World Gold Council.

Trading Strategies and Portfolio Protection

We should look to capture the strong upward momentum in gold as it sits comfortably above $4,146 and targets the 50-day moving average of $4,253. Derivative traders should consider buying short-term call options with strike prices targeting $4,200 to capitalize on this recent breakout. Historical market trends show that when gold breaks key resistance lines, it often moves quickly to test psychological levels like $4,300.

With the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting on July 29, we must prepare for sudden market shifts since the odds of a rate pause have dropped to 65%. Given the wild swings in oil and rising tensions with Iran, a long straddle option strategy will allow us to profit from massive price moves in either direction. This approach helps us manage the risk of a sudden safe-haven rush back into the US dollar if the geopolitical situation worsens.

To protect our portfolios, we need to set strict stop-losses or buy protective puts just below the $4,100 support level. If gold drops below this mark, it could quickly fall toward the recent low of $3,999. Historically, when geopolitical escalations drive oil prices up, the resulting inflation fears can boost the greenback and trigger rapid profit-taking in precious metals.

Monitoring Economic Indicators and Market Catalysts

We should also keep a close eye on the upcoming S&P Flash PMIs and jobless claims to gauge the overall strength of the economy. Support for gold remains fundamentally strong, backed by massive central bank purchases which historically reached record levels of over 1,000 tonnes annually in recent years. Trading with caution over the next fortnight will be key as the market digests these heavy economic and political catalysts.

Start trading now — click <a href="https://www.vtmarkets.com/en-ca/trade-now/>here to create your real VT Markets account.

Gold surges 1.5% to two-week high as dollar weakens; eyes $4,200 amid Fed, geopolitical risks.

[59

post-57440","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
