On 29 June, Alphabet replaced Verizon, and because the Dow is price-weighted, a stock near $350 now carries far more influence than one under $50. That change increases the benchmark’s exposure to artificial intelligence and cloud themes, with five of the Magnificent Seven now represented, allowing the average to push higher even as semiconductor leaders were being sold.

Quarter-end rebalancing also supported prices, with mechanical flows encouraging rotation as sectors diverged, although Wednesday also marked the first day of the new month. Economic data skewed soft: ADP private payrolls rose 98K in June versus 110K expected and 122K previously, while ISM manufacturing PMI eased to 53.3 from 54. Attention turns to NFP on Thursday at 12:30 GMT, brought forward by the Independence Day holiday, with consensus near 110K versus 172K, earnings around 3.5% YoY and unemployment at 4.3%, as the Fed repeats that inflation remains too high. Technical markers cited were 53,000 and 52,550 above, with support at 52,000, 51,500 and 50,000, alongside a rise of more than 16% from the April low.

Caution Over the Dow’s Record High and Breadth of Rally

We are treating the Dow’s new record above 52,500 with a great deal of caution. The index’s recent addition of Alphabet, a high-priced stock, means its movements are now heavily tied to a few big tech and AI names. This creates a situation where the Dow can hit new highs even as broad market participation is weak, which we saw when semiconductor stocks were selling off as the record was set.

The rally was also fueled by quarter-end rebalancing, a mechanical flow that can easily reverse now that we are in July. Historically, when an index hits a record but its Advance-Decline line fails to confirm the new high, it signals a weak foundation. We see that on the day of the new record, nearly 40% of the Dow’s components were actually down, which underscores the narrowness of this advance.

Soft Economic Data and Hedging Strategies

The economic data does not support an aggressively bullish stance. Private payrolls for June came in weak at just 98,000, and the latest JOLTS report showed job openings falling to their lowest level in three years. This paints a picture of a slowing, not collapsing, labor market which is unlikely to force the Fed’s hand.

We should not expect the Federal Reserve to step in and support the market. With the latest Core PCE inflation reading still elevated at 3.1%, well above the 2% target, policymakers are focused on prices. A soft economic print tomorrow is more likely to be viewed as a growth scare than a reason for the Fed to start cutting rates.

Given this setup, we see an opportunity in buying downside protection while volatility is relatively cheap. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is currently trading near a low of 14, making put options on the DIA ETF an inexpensive way to hedge long portfolios. We are looking at buying August puts with strikes around 51,500 to protect against a potential shakeout following tomorrow’s Nonfarm Payrolls report.

For a more defined-risk trade, a bear put spread could be effective. One could buy a put option with a 52,000 strike and simultaneously sell one at the 51,500 strike to target the first major support shelf mentioned. This strategy profits from a modest pullback while limiting cost, which is prudent given the thin liquidity expected in the pre-holiday session.

Start trading now — click <a href="https://www.vtmarkets.com/en-ca/trade-now/>here to create your real VT Markets account.

Dow hits 52,500 as Alphabet boosts tech weight; breadth weak, data soft; consider cheap VIX-linked downside hedges.

[59

post-56351","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
