A high interest rate differential makes the currency attractive, and we have already seen the USD\/RUB pair fall below 95 for the first time this year. We saw a similar pattern play out in late 2023 when the central bank acted decisively against rising inflation. From our perspective in 2025, that period taught us not to bet against the bank’s resolve. That historical precedent suggests policymakers will prioritize stability over stimulating growth right now.<\/p>\n
For equities, this environment is a headwind, as high borrowing costs can impact company earnings. The MOEX Russia Index has been flat over the last month, struggling to find direction against the restrictive monetary policy. We should consider protective put options or bearish spreads on broad market indices to hedge against a potential downturn.<\/p>\n
