The composite PMI coming in at 46.6 shows that Australia’s private sector is contracting faster than we anticipated. This miss on expectations is a clear bearish signal for the economy’s health moving into the second quarter. It tells us that the weakness we saw developing late in 2025 is carrying over with more force.<\/p>\n
This data strongly suggests the Reserve Bank of Australia will have to shift to a more dovish stance. With the latest monthly CPI indicator already showing inflation cooling to 3.1%, this weak growth number makes a future interest rate cut more probable. We should therefore consider positioning in interest rate futures that would profit from the RBA cutting the cash rate later this year.<\/p>\n
