The move followed a firmer US Dollar after hawkish Federal Reserve meeting minutes.

The January FOMC minutes said almost all members backed keeping rates unchanged, while a couple preferred a cut. Officials left open the option of cuts if inflation falls as expected, but several said hikes could be needed if price pressures persist.

Lagarde Exit Speculation

The Financial Times reported that ECB President Christine Lagarde may step down before her planned retirement in October 2027. The report said she wants to allow French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to choose a successor, with no date given.

Markets are set to watch preliminary PMI data from Germany and the Eurozone on Friday. Stronger readings could limit near-term Euro losses.

The Euro is used by 20 EU countries in the Eurozone and was 31% of global FX turnover in 2022, with average daily turnover above $2.2 trillion. EUR/USD is estimated at 30% of all FX transactions, followed by EUR/JPY 4%, EUR/GBP 3%, and EUR/AUD 2%.

The ECB, based in Frankfurt, sets policy to keep inflation near its 2% target and meets eight times a year. The four largest euro-area economies account for 75% of Eurozone output.

Policy Divergence Focus

We recall that around this time in 2025, the market was reacting to hawkish Federal Reserve minutes which hinted at further rate hikes. This pushed the EUR/USD below 1.1800 amidst uncertainty over the ECB’s leadership. The situation today has shifted, with the focus now on policy divergence rather than synchronized tightening.

The Federal Reserve’s tone has softened considerably since their hawkish stance in early 2025. With the latest US Consumer Price Index for January 2026 coming in at 2.8%, the Fed is now signaling a prolonged pause. This contrasts sharply with last year’s environment, suggesting that upside potential for the US dollar from interest rate surprises is limited.

Across the Atlantic, the European Central Bank faces a different challenge, as Eurozone HICP inflation remains stickier at 3.1% as of January 2026. Coupled with the Eurozone Composite PMI recently crossing into expansionary territory at 50.5, this puts pressure on the ECB to maintain a relatively hawkish stance. While the leadership succession talk from last year has quieted, it remains a background risk that could re-emerge.

Given this developing policy divergence, we should consider strategies that benefit from a potential gradual appreciation of the Euro against the US dollar. Selling out-of-the-money puts on EUR/USD could be a viable strategy to collect premium, assuming the pair finds support from a patient Fed. Traders should also watch for opportunities to buy call spreads to capitalize on a measured move higher, while hedging against the risk of renewed ECB leadership uncertainty.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

EUR/USD slips to 1.1785 as hawkish Fed minutes boost dollar; Lagarde exit rumor adds euro pressure.

[59

post-42244","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
