Early rebounds from 1.1805 stalled below 1.1850, and the pair eased towards 1.1835 amid reports that ECB President Christine Lagarde may leave before her term ends in October 2027.

A Financial Times report on Wednesday said Lagarde is considering stepping down ahead of the French elections in April 2027. The report said this would allow Emmanuel Macron and Friedrich Merz to choose a successor.

Fed Minutes And Key Data In Focus

Markets were otherwise quiet as traders awaited the minutes from the Federal Reserve’s January meeting, due later on Wednesday. US Q4 GDP and January PCE Price Index data are due on Friday and may steer near-term moves.

EUR/USD support is around 1.1800, and the trend is still bearish while below a broken trendline near 1.1880. On the 4-hour chart, MACD is below zero and RSI is 43, under the midline.

Resistance is at 1.1855, then 1.1880–1.1890, where the trendline meets the February 12 and 13 highs and the 38.2 Fibonacci retracement. Support lies at 1.1805, then 1.1765.

We saw the Euro struggle against the Dollar back in early 2025, with those rumors about ECB President Lagarde’s departure pushing the pair toward 1.1800. Today, the landscape is entirely different as EUR/USD is trading much lower, struggling to hold the 1.0750 level. The narrative has shifted from political uncertainty to a clear focus on diverging central bank policies.

Rate Differentials Drive The Trend

The key driver for this weakness remains the wide interest rate differential between the US Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank. With the Fed funds rate holding firm at a target of 5.25-5.50% and the ECB’s deposit facility rate at 4.00%, the higher yield continues to favor holding the dollar. This gap makes it expensive to bet against the USD, creating persistent downward pressure on the pair.

Recent economic data reinforces this view, making a quick turnaround unlikely. Inflation data from January 2026 showed Eurozone CPI at 2.6%, still stubbornly above the ECB’s target but on a clear downward path. In contrast, the latest US PCE data came in at 2.7%, suggesting the Fed has little reason to consider rate cuts in the immediate future.

For derivative traders, this sustained uncertainty means buying outright calls or puts is a high-risk strategy. We are seeing more interest in options strategies that profit from volatility, such as straddles, ahead of major data releases. Implied volatility for EUR/USD one-month options is hovering around 6.5%, which is elevated compared to last year and reflects the market’s anticipation of a decisive move.

Looking ahead, we are focused on the upcoming preliminary inflation figures for February from major Eurozone economies and the next US jobs report. These data points will be critical in shaping expectations for the central bank meetings in March. Any surprise in this data could provide the next major catalyst for the pair.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

Euro weakens as Lagarde exit rumors weigh; EUR/USD stalls below 1.1850 ahead of Fed minutes, data.

[59

post-42182","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
