It held above $5,000 as expectations for early US rate cuts eased and demand for safer assets continued.

US Nonfarm Payrolls rose by 130K in January, above the 70K forecast and the strongest gain since December 2024. The unemployment rate fell to 4.3% from 4.4%, supporting a view that the Federal Reserve may keep rates unchanged in the near term.

Dollar And Yields Cap Pressure

After the data, the US Dollar and Treasury yields did not extend gains, which helped limit pressure on gold. The US Dollar Index (DXY) traded near 96.80, close to one-week lows.

Kansas City Fed President Jeffrey Schmid said rate cuts could keep inflation higher for longer, with inflation close to 3%. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said the funds rate is “right around neutral” and supported staying on hold.

Markets still price close to 50 basis points of easing this year, with the first cut most likely in June–July, according to CME FedWatch. Focus turns to US CPI on Friday.

US-Iran tensions remained elevated, with plans reported to deploy a second US aircraft-carrier strike group to the Middle East. Technical indicators show weaker momentum, with RSI near 55, ADX near 8, support near $5,000 then $4,850, and resistance at $5,100.

Range Bound Setup And Strategy

We see gold is currently caught in a tight range, struggling to break past $5,100 while finding solid support around the $5,000 mark. The strong job numbers from January are tempering expectations for immediate Fed rate cuts, putting a lid on prices. At the same time, ongoing US-Iran tensions are providing a reliable floor of support due to safe-haven demand.

Recent data reinforces this cautious stance, as the January jobs report released last week showed a robust 225,000 new positions, keeping the unemployment rate low at 3.6%. This, combined with the latest Consumer Price Index reading holding stubbornly at 3.2% year-over-year, gives the Federal Reserve little reason to rush into cutting interest rates. This environment of economic strength and persistent inflation supports the case for a higher-for-longer policy.

For derivatives traders, this suggests that selling volatility could be a prudent strategy in the coming days. With gold pinned in this range, options strategies that profit from low price movement, such as selling straddles or strangles around the $5,050 level, could generate income from premium decay. The low volatility indicated by the technicals supports this view, at least until the next major economic data release.

However, we must remain vigilant for the upcoming Producer Price Index (PPI) and retail sales data next week. We saw several times back in 2025 how a surprise inflation number could trigger a significant breakout, and a sharp PPI figure could easily send gold breaking out of its current consolidation pattern. A hotter-than-expected number would likely push gold below $5,000, while a surprisingly cool print might provide the fuel to break resistance at $5,100.

The persistent geopolitical risk should not be underestimated, and it makes buying longer-dated, out-of-the-money call options an attractive hedge against a sudden escalation. We only need to look back to the market reaction following the Strait of Hormuz incident in late 2025, where gold spiked nearly 4% in a single trading session. Holding some cheap upside protection seems sensible while the underlying political situation remains tense.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

Gold hovers near $5,060, supported above $5,000 as rate-cut hopes cool and safe-haven demand persists.

[59

post-41723","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
