The exchange rate movements were influenced by the European Central Bank (ECB) and Bank of England (BoE) policy announcements.

The BoE maintained its Repo Rate at 3.75%, with an unexpected close decision, where four members supported a rate cut. Governor Andrew Bailey signalled potential future rate cuts as inflation is expected to reach the 2% target sooner than anticipated.

ECB’s Steady Policy Stance

The ECB also held rates steady, with President Christine Lagarde suggesting current policies are adequate and downplaying inflation risks linked to a strong Euro. The Euro saw a 0.7% rise on Thursday post central bank decisions.

EUR/GBP’s Friday performance was further affected by disappointing German Industrial Production data, which showed a 1.9% decrease in December against a forecasted 0.3% decline. The previous month’s figures were also revised down from a 0.8% increase to 0.2%.

Central banks play a vital role in ensuring price stability by adjusting policy rates to control inflation. The process involves various decisions by politically independent policy board members who lean towards either ‘doves’ or ‘hawks’ in their monetary policy approach.

Looking back at the analysis from this time in 2025, we can see the beginning of a major policy divergence that defined the market for much of the last year. The Bank of England’s dovish pivot, with more members voting for a cut than expected, was a clear signal that Sterling would weaken. The European Central Bank’s steady message, in contrast, set the stage for Euro strength.

Current Monetary Landscape

That trend has largely played out, but the ground is now shifting. After cutting its Repo Rate twice in 2025 to 3.25%, the Bank of England is now on hold as the latest inflation data for January 2026 showed a surprising uptick to 2.3%, slightly above its target. This has forced markets to price out any further cuts for the first half of this year.

Meanwhile, the ECB’s confidence from 2025 was tested by stubbornly high services inflation through the second half of the year. The latest core HICP inflation figure for the Eurozone remains elevated at 2.9%, meaning President Lagarde has no room to even hint at monetary easing. This has kept the ECB’s key rate firm at 4.50%, where it has been since late 2024.

This new dynamic suggests the strong uptrend in EUR/GBP, which pushed the pair from 0.8700 to its current level near 0.8950, may be exhausted. The primary driver of Euro strength, the widening interest rate differential, is no longer expanding. The BoE has paused its cuts and the ECB is unlikely to hike further.

For the coming weeks, we see limited upside for the pair and a growing risk of a pullback toward the 0.8800 level. Derivative traders should consider buying EUR/GBP put options with a three-month expiry to position for this potential correction. This strategy offers a defined risk while capturing any significant downward move.

Furthermore, implied volatility in the pair has fallen to multi-year lows, recently touching levels not seen since before the pandemic. Looking at historical data, such low volatility often precedes a significant price move, making options relatively cheap to purchase right now. Selling out-of-the-money call spreads could also be an effective strategy to collect premium while betting that the rally has stalled.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

EUR/GBP dips below 0.8700 despite positive weekly close; central bank signals and data drive price action.

[59

post-41193","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
