Growing political uncertainty in Japan weakens the Japanese Yen against the US Dollar. The Bureau of Labor Statistics will delay the January employment report due to a partial government shutdown.

Japan Prepares For Increased Market Unpredictability

Japan prepares for increased market unpredictability before Sunday’s snap general election. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s fiscal actions, such as suspending the consumption tax on food for two years, add pressure on the Yen. Markets anticipate potential state interventions, with Japan’s Finance Minister coordinating with US authorities.

Expectations around US Federal Reserve leadership changes could boost the US Dollar. US President Donald Trump has named Kevin Warsh as a candidate for Fed Chairman. Warsh’s focus is likely on reducing the balance sheet, potentially slowing interest rate cuts.

The Japanese Yen is globally significant, driven by the Japanese economy’s health. The Bank of Japan influences Yen value through monetary policies. The Yen usually benefits in risk-averse climates as a reliable currency.

A decade-long policy divergence has widened differences between Japanese and US bond yields. Shift in BOJ’s stance in 2024 narrows this gap, impacting the Yen’s performance against the US Dollar. In uncertain times, the Yen strengthens due to its safe-haven status.

Looking back at the political uncertainty in late 2025, we saw the USD/JPY cross 155.50 ahead of Japan’s snap election. That upward pressure has continued, with the pair now trading around 158.20 as we head into February 2026. The market is clearly still focused on policy divergence between the US and Japan.

Prime Minister Takaichis Reflationary Policies

Prime Minister Takaichi’s reflationary policies, like the food consumption tax suspension, are now fueling inflation, with Japan’s national Core CPI hitting 2.5% year-over-year in the latest January 2026 report. This persistent inflation, without a significant Bank of Japan rate hike, continues to weaken the yen. The BoJ has only managed a small rate increase to 0.10%, which has done little to counter the trend.

On the US side, we saw the confirmation of Kevin Warsh as the new Fed Chair, which has solidified a hawkish stance as anticipated last year. The Federal Reserve has held the Fed funds rate steady at 5.25%, citing stubborn core services inflation which came in at 3.8% for December 2025. This firm US policy keeps the dollar attractive.

This has pushed the yield differential between US and Japanese 10-year government bonds to over 420 basis points, making the carry trade highly profitable. We see institutional flows continuing to borrow yen to invest in higher-yielding dollar assets. The fundamental case for a strong dollar against the yen is therefore even more entrenched than it was in late 2025.

We remember the intervention warnings from Finance Minister Katayama last year, and while there was a brief, sharp dip to 153 in November 2025, the market quickly bought back in. This shows that verbal warnings or even minor interventions are not enough to reverse the powerful trend driven by interest rates. Traders should view any intervention-led dips as potential buying opportunities.

Given this sustained momentum, buying call options on USD/JPY offers a way to participate in further upside while defining risk. A move towards the 160.00 psychological level seems probable in the coming weeks. Using options allows traders to profit from this direction without being fully exposed to the sharp, short-term volatility that another surprise intervention could cause.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

USD/JPY rises as Japan’s political uncertainty and fiscal changes weaken Yen; US Fed shift boosts Dollar.

[59

post-40882","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
