This decline follows news of potential US-Iran talks on Friday, with increased diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions.

US Iran Talks In Turkey

Iran and the US are set to resume nuclear negotiations in Turkey. These talks involve US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, focusing on reviving diplomacy and reducing fears of regional conflict.

The progress of US-Iran negotiations remains a focal point for traders, as an easing of tensions could impact WTI prices. US President Trump announced a tariff reduction on India, which may buoy WTI prices due to India’s significant role as a crude oil importer.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) is known for its quality, characterised as “light” and “sweet.” It is a major crude oil benchmark, influenced by global supply-demand dynamics, political instability, and OPEC’s production decisions.

Weekly oil inventory data from the API and EIA impact WTI prices, with changes reflecting supply-demand balance. OPEC’s production quotas can also influence prices, with decisions to alter supply levels affecting market conditions.

Traders Facing Increased Volatility

With WTI crude oil falling to around $61.50, we see the market is pricing out the geopolitical risk ahead of potential US-Iran talks this Friday. This sharp drop presents an opportunity for traders prepared for increased volatility. The immediate sentiment is bearish, suggesting prices could test lower levels if diplomatic progress is made.

Given the scheduled talks, we believe traders should consider positioning for further downside this week. The path of least resistance appears to be lower as long as de-escalation remains the dominant narrative. This could involve strategies like buying put options to capitalize on a potential drop while limiting risk.

However, the outcome of these negotiations is far from certain, and a breakdown in talks could cause prices to snap back violently. We saw similar volatility throughout 2025 during the Red Sea shipping disruptions, where prices swung by more than 15% in a matter of weeks. Therefore, hedging any short positions with call options is a prudent measure to protect against a sudden reversal.

Adding to the bearish pressure, the latest Energy Information Administration (EIA) report showed a surprise build in US crude inventories of 2.1 million barrels, contrary to analyst expectations of a small draw. Yet, we should not forget that OPEC+ is holding its production cuts steady, which should provide a floor for prices near the $60 level. This underlying supply management limits the potential for a complete price collapse.

On the demand side, the reduction of US tariffs on India offers a supportive cushion for the market. India’s oil demand remains robust, with imports in January 2026 reaching a near-record 5.2 million barrels per day. This strong consumption, along with steady demand from China, should help absorb some of the excess supply and temper further price declines.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

WTI oil prices dip amid US-Iran talks; traders watch diplomacy, tariffs, and inventories for market shifts.

[59

post-40791","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
