USD/CAD rose to 1.3520, up by 0.22%, amid lingering political pressures on the Fed.

Nomination And Market Reaction

Recently, US Dollar fell due to fears about the Fed’s independence. However, the nomination of Kevin Warsh, seen as more institutional, offers some reassurance. Although Warsh aligns with Trump’s interest rate cuts, his reputation as an inflation hawk suggests he may resist drastic rate reductions.

Political risks for the Fed persist, with Trump criticising Chair Powell and attempting to dismiss Governor Lisa Cook. A criminal investigation involving Powell adds to these challenges. The US Dollar finds additional support from Producer Price Index data, which rose 0.5% month-over-month in December, exceeding expectations.

Core PPI also surprised, increasing by 0.7% month-over-month, defying market predictions. The US Dollar Index recovered, trading at 96.80 after earlier four-year lows. Meanwhile, Canada’s GDP remained flat in November after a decrease, providing little support to the Loonie, though higher oil prices offer some relief. WTI reached $65.24 per barrel, supporting the Canadian Dollar.

We recall how the market found some relief late last year when Kevin Warsh’s nomination seemed to calm fears about the Fed’s direction. However, the inflation story that was brewing then has become much more pressing. The most recent Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for January 2026 showed a year-over-year increase of 3.5%, surprising markets that had priced in a continued slowdown.

Inflation And Rate Hike Speculations

This persistent inflation creates a difficult situation, especially after the two small rate cuts we saw in the second half of 2025. Fed Chair Warsh is now caught between ongoing political calls for accommodation and data that screams for a more hawkish stance. This policy uncertainty is causing significant swings in interest rate futures, with the market now pricing in a 40% chance of a rate hike by mid-year, up from just 10% a month ago.

For derivative traders, this conflict between data and policy is a clear signal to watch volatility closely. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) has already ticked up to 18.5 from a low of 14 late last year, suggesting traders are pricing in bigger market moves. This environment makes buying options, like straddles on major currency pairs, an interesting strategy to play potential breakouts.

On the Canadian side, the picture is also mixed, limiting clear direction for the loonie. While recent geopolitical tensions have pushed WTI crude oil above $75 a barrel, providing support, our own economic growth remains sluggish at just 0.9% annualized in the last quarter. The Bank of Canada has maintained a cautious tone, signaling it is unlikely to match any potential hawkish moves from the south.

As a result, USD/CAD has been trapped in a range, with strong US inflation data pushing it up and high oil prices pulling it back down. Traders are using options to bet on the pair remaining between 1.3400 and 1.3750 in the near term. A break outside this range would signal that either the Fed’s policy or the energy market is starting to dominate the narrative.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

USD gains as Fed concerns ease; Warsh nomination reassures markets; strong PPI data, flat Canadian GDP.

[59

post-40570","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
