Nvidia shares are down 2.3%, and JP Morgan has fallen by 1.8%. The impact of potential EU tariffs on US tech and banks could strain global supply chains. Comments from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant have not significantly eased market concerns.

Japanese Bond Yields Concerns

The Greenland issue is receiving attention, but the rise in Japanese bond yields might pose a greater global challenge. Japanese 30-year bond yields increased by 26bps, reflecting fiscal policy concerns. Japan’s bond market instability could influence global capital flows, although Japanese investors have not yet started repatriating funds.

Netflix has made a new cash offer of $27.75 per share for Warner Bros, marking it as Warner’s preferred suitor. Warner Bros has agreed to the terms, pending shareholder approval by April. Paramount is also vying for Warner Bros, and regulatory challenges could arise for Netflix.

Netflix plans to spin off Warner’s cable business, which will be called Discovery Global. With the announcement, Netflix’s shares rose 1.5% in pre-market trading, adding depth to its upcoming earnings release.

Given the market’s reaction to the ongoing Greenland situation, we are seeing a significant spike in implied volatility. With the VIX, a key measure of market fear, climbing towards 28, traders should consider buying protection against further declines in major indices. Historically, such manmade crises have pushed the VIX above 35, as we saw during similar tariff disputes back in 2025.

Purchasing put options on the SPY and QQQ ETFs provides a direct hedge against the expected sell-off in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq. Because US tech and banks are specifically at risk from potential EU tariffs, we also see value in buying puts on sector-specific ETFs like the XLK for technology and the XLF for financials. This allows for a more targeted approach to hedge against downside in the most exposed areas of the market.

Japanese Debt and Currency Strategies

While Washington is the immediate focus, we believe the sharp rise in Japanese government bond yields presents a more serious long-term threat. The 26-basis-point jump in Japan’s 30-year yield is unsettlingly fast and brings back memories of the interest rate pressures that led to the Silicon Valley Bank collapse back in 2023. A systemic event in Japan could have a much larger global impact than the current political noise.

This instability in Japanese debt makes the yen particularly interesting, as it is currently underperforming despite the global risk-off mood. This uncertainty is an opportunity for traders to position for a large move in the currency, regardless of direction. We are seeing traders use option strangles on the USD/JPY pair, which will profit from a significant price swing as the February 8th election approaches.

Separately, the new all-cash offer from Netflix for Warner Bros. creates a clear merger arbitrage play. Since the deal requires shareholder and regulatory approval, with a vote not expected until April, Warner Bros. stock will likely trade below the $27.75 offer price due to the uncertainty. This spread between the market price and the deal price is where traders can find opportunity.

To capitalize on this, we are looking at buying Warner Bros. call options with strike prices below $27.75 and expiration dates set for after the expected April vote. The primary risk is the deal falling apart, similar to the long regulatory delays we saw with the Microsoft-Activision deal that concluded in 2023. Traders who buy these options are betting that Netflix will successfully navigate the hurdles and close the acquisition.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

US stocks drop, Nvidia and JPM fall; Japan bond yields rise; Netflix bids $27.75 for Warner Bros.

[59

post-39657","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
