Eurostat will share December inflation figures, while the US will release ADP Employment Change for December, JOLTS Job Openings for November, and the ISM Services PMI for December.

The US Dollar Index experienced a rise on Tuesday after Monday’s decline, settling at around 98.50 early Wednesday. In Germany, December’s annual inflation fell to 1.8% from November’s 2.3%, impacting the Euro, which lost nearly 0.3% against the US Dollar.

Australia’s Economic Performance

Australia reported a yearly CPI increase of 3.4% for November, lower than the expected 3.7%, keeping AUD/USD strong near 0.6750. GBP/USD slipped after hitting a September high and now consolidates near 1.3500. USD/JPY remains stable at around 156.50, with Japan’s Labor Cash Earnings data due Thursday.

Gold maintained momentum with a 1% gain, holding above $4,450, while Silver’s two-day rally rose over 10%, trading above $80. Employment levels impact currencies, with high employment boosting the local currency’s value and inflation, influencing monetary policy. Wage growth affects consumer spending and inflation, guiding central banks’ monetary decisions. Central banks consider employment as a key economic health indicator and its relation to inflation.

This time last year, in January 2025, we were bracing for volatility from key Eurozone inflation and US employment reports. The US Dollar was gaining traction around 98.50, and there was a clear focus on how central banks would react to the incoming data. Many of the themes from that period have now fully evolved, creating a different set of opportunities.

Looking back, the US labor market did begin to show signs of cooling throughout 2025, a crucial development we were watching for. For instance, the December 2025 Non-Farm Payrolls report showed job growth slowing to 155,000, missing consensus forecasts and confirming a trend of easing wage pressures. This has shifted the Federal Reserve’s narrative, leading us to believe that rate cuts are now a matter of when, not if, which is why the Dollar Index now trades closer to 101.50.

Persistent Inflation in Europe

In Europe, the inflation story we were tracking proved to be much more persistent than the 2% forecast mentioned this time last year. The flash estimate for Eurozone core HICP in December 2025 came in at a stubborn 2.7%, keeping pressure on the European Central Bank to maintain a restrictive stance. This policy divergence has pushed EUR/USD down from its 1.1700 level in early 2025 to the 1.0800 range we see today, and traders should consider options strategies that profit from this ongoing tension.

The spectacular rally in precious metals seen in late 2024 and early 2025, with Gold over $4,450, ultimately faded as high interest rates took their toll over the past year. However, with the prospect of falling US rates in the coming months, these non-yielding assets are becoming attractive again. Derivative traders should be looking at buying call options on gold and silver to position for a potential resurgence in the first half of 2026.

Given the pivot in central bank expectations, implied volatility in the currency and bond markets is likely to rise in the coming weeks. We anticipate that pairs sensitive to US interest rates, such as USD/JPY, will experience significant moves from their current 147.00 level. Traders could look to purchase put options on USD/JPY as a way to position for the Fed signaling imminent rate cuts.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

Markets brace for economic data; inflation and employment figures sway currencies, impacting central banks’ monetary policy outlooks.

[59

post-38473","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
