This provides a direct hedge against a sharp, sudden appreciation of the yen if the Ministry of Finance decides to act. We must be cautious about holding large short yen positions, as they are now vulnerable to a sharp reversal. The end-of-year period often has thinner liquidity, which could make any intervention move more dramatic and volatile.
