The total fell to 224,000, which is better than the expected 225,000.

The 4-week moving average of jobless claims decreased by 5,000, reaching 217,500 for the same period. In contrast, seasonally adjusted insured unemployment saw an increase, reaching 1,897,000, a rise of 67,000 from the week before.

Despite a decline in jobless claims, the US Dollar Index remains slightly weaker. It lost 0.1% on the day and was last reported at 98.30.

We saw the initial jobless claims for the week ending December 13th come in at 224,000, which was slightly better than the 225,000 expected. This report confirms the trend of labor market resilience we have seen throughout 2025. This sustained strength gives the Federal Reserve very little room to consider cutting interest rates.

This situation is reminiscent of the period between 2022 and 2023, where a strong job market allowed the Fed to focus exclusively on fighting inflation. Given that the latest CPI data for November 2025 showed inflation remaining sticky at 3.2%, we believe the Fed will maintain its hawkish stance. The market is now pricing in less than a 20% chance of a rate cut in the first quarter of 2026.

Impact on Trading Strategies

For derivative traders, this stability in the Fed’s outlook suggests that options betting on a significant drop in interest rates are likely overpriced. We should consider strategies that benefit from this “higher for longer” scenario, such as selling out-of-the-money calls on Treasury bond futures. The low jobless numbers are a key anchor for this view heading into the new year.

While the US Dollar Index initially dipped on the news, the underlying economic data supports its strength against other major currencies. The slight rise in continuing claims is worth noting but is not significant enough to alter the primary trend of a tight labor market. Therefore, options strategies that favor continued dollar strength, particularly against currencies with more dovish central banks, remain attractive.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

US jobless claims fell by 13,000, hitting 224,000, while insured unemployment rose by 67,000.

[59

post-37235","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
