This downturn comes amid ongoing trade deal concerns between the US and India, which has impacted market confidence.

Federal Reserve Interest Rate Update

The Federal Reserve recently cut interest rates by 25 basis points to a range of 3.50%-3.75%. It’s anticipated that there will be only one rate cut during 2026, with the Fed noting weak labour market conditions influencing its decision.

In trade negotiations, discussions continue between the US and India, with expectations for balanced outcomes. The Reserve Bank of India reportedly sold US Dollars to stabilise the Rupee, which has been affected by trade tensions.

In the currency markets, the Indian Rupee weakened across major currencies, with the Swiss Franc showing the highest appreciation. The trade uncertainties have caused Foreign Institutional Investors to sell Indian equities throughout December, amounting to Rs. 16,470.35 crore.

The US Federal Reserve plays a critical role in influencing the US Dollar through interest rate adjustments. Quantitative easing and tightening are tools used by the Fed to manage economic conditions, each with varying effects on the value of the US Dollar.

With the USD/INR pair hitting a fresh all-time high near 90.80, we see the market’s anxiety over the US-India trade talks as the primary driver. Foreign investors have pulled over Rs. 16,470 crore from Indian equities this month, adding significant pressure on the rupee. This trend of outflows mirrors what we saw during similar periods of global uncertainty back in 2023, suggesting risk aversion is high.

Reserve Bank of India Actions

Even though the Federal Reserve cut its rate to 3.50%-3.75% this week, the US Dollar’s resulting weakness is being overshadowed by the rupee’s own problems. The Dollar Index (DXY) may be near a seven-week low, but this is a rupee story, not a dollar story. The latest US CPI data released last month showed inflation cooling to 2.9%, justifying the Fed’s move and suggesting further dollar strength may be limited.

We must watch the Reserve Bank of India’s actions closely, as they are likely selling dollars to prevent an even sharper slide. Looking back at 2022 and 2023, the RBI spent considerable foreign exchange reserves to defend the rupee, but it could only slow the depreciation rather than reverse it. We expect similar intervention now, which might create temporary dips in the USD/INR pair that could be seen as buying opportunities.

The upcoming Indian retail inflation data for November, due tomorrow, is the next major catalyst. Consensus estimates are for a print around 5.2%, which remains well above the RBI’s 4% medium-term target. A higher-than-expected number could force the RBI into a more hawkish stance, providing some short-term relief for the rupee.

Given the high uncertainty, we should consider using options to define risk. Buying outright call options on USD/INR is expensive due to high volatility, so bullish call spreads could be a more cost-effective way to bet on a continued move towards the 92.00 level. For those anticipating a “sell the news” pullback if a trade deal is announced, buying short-term puts offers a way to profit from a potential dip.

The technical trend remains clearly bullish, with the pair trading firmly above its 20-day moving average of 89.74. We should view any pullbacks towards this support level as potential entry points for long futures positions. As long as we remain above this mark, the path of least resistance for the USD/INR is higher.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

Indian Rupee weakens sharply as trade tensions rise; Fed cuts rates amid weak US labour market.

[59

post-36608","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
