The sector showed eased contractions in total and new export orders since July, and there was a slight uptick in business confidence, although future expectations remain cautious.

Employment within the sector witnessed an unexpected increase, contributing positively to the overall PMI. Despite a decline in demand and production, conditions are less severe than before, indicating a potential turnaround. However, the employment rise is largely linked to temporary contracts and work.

Purchasing Volumes and Input Costs

Purchasing volumes have been on a downtrend for more than three years, and delivery times have worsened, potentially due to tariffs. This has led to a reduction in inventories. Input costs surged sharply, largely driven by higher wages and raw material prices, leading firms to adjust their inventory strategies. Despite these cost pressures, intense competition has limited the ability of producers to pass on these increases to consumers. The resolution of the US-EU tariff agreement has provided some trade certainty and planning stability for businesses.

The French manufacturing sector is showing its first sign of expansion in over two years, which we see as a cautiously positive signal. With the headline PMI number now above 50, traders should consider the CAC 40, which has been struggling to break the 8,100 level for a month, as poised for a potential short-term rally. We think buying near-term call options on the index could be a way to position for a positive reaction in the coming days.

However, we must temper this optimism with the underlying details which show a fragile situation. The rise in employment is mainly from temporary contracts, and firms are facing a margin squeeze due to rising costs and intense competition. With Eurostat’s flash estimate for August inflation coming in at 2.7%, these cost pressures are real and could cap any significant corporate profit growth.

This data should provide a modest tailwind for the euro, as France’s economy shows signs of stabilizing the wider Eurozone. We could see the EUR/USD pair test recent highs, especially as this contrasts with some mixed data coming out of the United States last week. However, the European Central Bank’s emphasis on data dependency means a major policy shift is unlikely, which should limit the currency’s upside.

Interest Rates and Market Volatility

The combination of slight growth and rising input costs makes it much harder for the ECB to consider cutting rates. We are watching short-term interest rate futures, as they may begin to price out any lingering expectations of rate cuts by year-end. We remember the market getting ahead of itself in late 2023 on similar data, so we expect the ECB will want to see a more durable trend before acting.

Implied volatility in European equities may decrease on this news, as the headline figure removes some of the immediate economic uncertainty. Options on the VSTOXX, Europe’s main volatility index, have already seen implied volatility fall to a six-week low this morning. Selling some of this volatility through short-dated options strategies could be attractive, but the fragility mentioned in the report means a sharp snap-back is a constant risk.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

France’s manufacturing PMI rose, signaling eased contractions, cautious optimism, and employment growth despite persistent cost pressures.

[59

post-29940","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
