This comes after moderate US inflation figures strengthened expectations for a Federal Reserve rate cut in September to support the softening labour market.

Bets on a 25 basis points cut next month have increased to 95%, up from 85% before the latest US CPI release. The US Consumer Price Index for July showed steady yearly inflation at 2.7%, contrary to expectations of an increase to 2.8%, while core inflation was slightly higher at 3.1%, from June’s 2.9%.

Fed Officials Speak

The day’s agenda is light, featuring only speeches from Fed officials Austan Goolsbee and Raphael Bostic. Recent comments from both have been dovish, unlikely to offer any support to the USD, with the NZD benefiting from a US-China trade truce extending for 90 days.

Inflation measures the price rise of a basket of goods and is crucial for central banks. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) reflects price changes over time, with core CPI excluding volatile food and fuel elements. Inflation impacts currency value as central banks adjust interest rates in response.

We are seeing the New Zealand Dollar strengthen because the market firmly believes the US Federal Reserve will cut interest rates next month. The move above the 0.5970 resistance level is significant, putting the psychologically important 0.6000 mark in immediate focus. This shift is primarily driven by a weakening US Dollar as traders anticipate easier monetary policy.

The case for a US rate cut is becoming very convincing, especially after looking at recent data from our perspective in August 2025. The recent July Non-Farm Payrolls report, which showed job growth of only 150,000 against expectations of 180,000, confirmed the softening labor market trends we have been watching. This, combined with the steady US inflation, gives the Fed a clear reason to act in September.

Policy Divergence Benefits NZD

In contrast, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand is in a different position, providing a tailwind for the Kiwi dollar. The RBNZ held its Official Cash Rate steady at 5.25% in its last meeting, expressing that domestic inflation pressures have not cooled enough yet. This policy divergence, where the US is easing while New Zealand holds firm, makes holding the NZD more attractive.

For derivative traders, this creates a clear opportunity over the coming weeks. We believe buying NZD/USD call options with strike prices just above 0.6000 is a sensible approach. This strategy allows us to profit from a continued rise in the currency pair while limiting our potential loss to the premium paid for the options.

Looking back, we saw similar strong trends during the post-pandemic policy shifts of 2022 and 2023, where central bank divergence was a key driver for currency markets. The current implied volatility in the options market is still reasonable, suggesting that now is a good time to position for a potential breakout. The 90-day extension of the US-China trade truce also reduces global risk, which historically benefits the NZD.

If the pair manages to break and hold above the 0.6000 level, we anticipate a faster move towards the 0.6150 area, a key resistance level from late 2024. The upcoming speeches from known doves Goolsbee and Bostic will likely reinforce the market’s expectation of a rate cut. We should watch these events closely as they could provide the catalyst for the next leg higher.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

New Zealand Dollar climbs past resistance amid weaker US inflation, rising Fed rate cut expectations, and trade optimism.

[59

post-28976","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
