Morgan’s analysts express concern regarding political interference in U.S. economic data collection integrity

J.P. Morgan has expressed concerns over the removal of Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Commissioner Erika McEntarfer. The bank warns that this could jeopardise the integrity of U.S. economic data and impact monetary policy and financial stability.

The bank highlighted the risks associated with the potential politicisation of federal data collection. It stated that compromised data could lead to misguided economic decisions, akin to navigating with faulty instruments.

Risks Of Politicisation

J.P. Morgan also refutes the idea that private-sector data could replace official statistics. Alternative “big data” indicators, though increasingly popular, still rely on federal benchmarks and often lack comprehensive nationwide coverage.

The bank emphasised the importance of maintaining the independence and integrity of institutions like the BLS. This is especially necessary during times of increased policy sensitivity to ensure well-informed economic policymaking.

The recent warnings about the politicization of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) signal a period of high uncertainty for us. This means we should anticipate increased volatility in the markets, especially around the release of key economic reports like jobs and inflation data. The core issue is that if the data’s integrity is in doubt, so is the Federal Reserve’s ability to set policy effectively.

Market Volatility And Distrust

We are already seeing signs of this distrust in the market. The CBOE Volatility Index, or VIX, has been creeping higher, recently pushing toward 19 after the latest jobs report, up from the calmer levels below 15 we saw earlier in the year. Furthermore, the July 2025 jobs report showed a major discrepancy, with the official BLS number coming in at a strong +280,000 while the private ADP report suggested a much weaker +150,000, fueling skepticism.

The market’s choppy reaction to last Friday’s jobs numbers highlighted this confusion, as an initial rally quickly faded. If we cannot rely on employment and inflation figures, forecasting the Fed’s next interest rate decision becomes far more difficult. This makes pricing derivatives tied to future rates, such as SOFR futures, particularly challenging right now.

Looking back, we saw similar, though less direct, questions about data during the politically charged environment of 2020. During that time, holding positions that benefited from rising volatility was a more reliable strategy than betting on a specific market direction. Therefore, buying options to protect against sharp, unpredictable swings seems more prudent than making large directional bets in the coming weeks.

With the next major inflation report on the horizon, we must approach it with extreme caution. Strategies that profit from a large price move in either direction, like straddles or strangles, could be valuable as the market may either dismiss the number or react erratically. Any data released from official sources will now face a higher level of scrutiny from traders until confidence is restored.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

J.P.
