It managed to rise by 31.38 points or 0.15% to end at 21129.67.

In contrast, the S&P index fell for the second consecutive day, decreasing by 7.96 points or 0.12% to close at 6362.90. The Dow industrial average also fell, dropping 171.71 points or 0.3%, closing at 44461.28.

The Small Cap Russell 2000

The small-cap Russell 2000 experienced a decrease as well, falling by 10.56 points or 0.47% to close at 2232.39. Federal Reserve Chair Powell did not indicate any movement towards a rate cut in September, which dampened earlier gains.

We are seeing a clear split in the market today, July 30th, 2025. The broader indexes like the S&P 500 fell because the Federal Reserve is not ready to promise a rate cut for September. However, big tech stocks in the NASDAQ showed strength, pushing that index higher into the close.

This cautious stance from the Fed isn’t surprising given recent data. With the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report from early July showing inflation still hovering at a stubborn 3.1%, and a solid June jobs report adding 210,000 positions, the Fed has little reason to rush. Expectations for a September cut, tracked by the CME FedWatch Tool, have now dropped below 40%.

Derivative Traders And Market Uncertainty

For derivative traders, this uncertainty suggests volatility could rise in the coming weeks. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is currently around 16, which is relatively moderate. We believe buying VIX call options or options on volatility ETFs could be a prudent way to profit from expected market swings as we head towards the next Fed meeting.

The S&P 500 has now declined for two straight days after hitting records, showing some fatigue. Given the weakness in smaller companies, as seen in the Russell 2000’s drop, traders may want to buy protective puts on broad market ETFs like SPY and IWM. This can help hedge portfolios against further downside if rate concerns continue to weigh on the wider economy.

The strength in the NASDAQ, led by a few mega-cap tech names, reminds us of the market action back in 2023 where the “Magnificent Seven” stocks drove performance. This divergence presents a relative value opportunity for traders. We see potential in strategies that go long NASDAQ 100 futures (NQ) while simultaneously shorting S&P 500 futures (ES), betting on tech’s continued outperformance.

Create your live VT Markets account and start trading now.

NASDAQ rose slightly, while S&P, Dow, and Russell 2000 fell amid Fed’s cautious rate stance.

[59

post-27716","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live-updates
["GET
