Quote-driven market Definition

What Is a Quote-Driven Market?

A quote-driven market is a market in which prices are set by market makers who provide quotes for products. Rather than relying solely on matching buy and sell orders from other participants, trades in a quote-driven market are typically executed directly against the price a market maker is willing to offer at that moment.

How Quote-Driven Markets Operate

Market makers in a quote-driven market continuously publish bid and ask prices, profiting from the spread between the two while standing ready to buy or sell at those quoted levels. This structure is common in over-the-counter forex trading and many CFD markets, where a designated party is always available to take the other side of a trade.

Quote-Driven vs Order-Driven Markets

An order-driven market, by contrast, matches buyers and sellers directly through a central order book, such as a typical stock exchange, without a designated market maker setting every price. Quote-driven markets can offer more consistent liquidity, since a market maker is generally always present, while order-driven markets rely on enough independent participants placing orders at any given time.

Hybrid Markets Blending Both Models

Some modern markets combine elements of both structures, using market makers to provide a baseline quote while also allowing order-driven matching alongside it. This hybrid approach aims to combine the consistent liquidity of a quote-driven model with the potentially tighter pricing that can come from direct order matching between participants.

Market Maker Pricing Has Trade-Offs: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, because prices in a quote-driven market are set by the market maker, the spread offered can vary between providers and may widen during volatile conditions or around major news events. Comparing how consistently a provider quotes during fast-moving markets is worth considering when assessing execution quality.

Where Quote-Driven Pricing Fits in Your Trading

Quote-driven markets underpin much of how forex and CFD trading function day to day, with market makers providing the continuous liquidity that allows trades to be executed quickly even in less active conditions. Understanding this structure helps explain how the prices you trade on are actually formed behind the scenes.

⚠ Risk Warning: CFDs are complex financial instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Ensure you fully understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
