Glossary of Trading Terms

Over-the-counter Definition

What Does Over-the-Counter Mean?

Over-the-counter (OTC) trading takes place directly between two parties, typically through a network of brokers and dealers, rather than on a centralised exchange. It’s commonly used for products that aren’t listed on larger exchanges.

How OTC Trading Differs From Exchange Trading

On an exchange, prices are determined publicly through a central order book, with standardised contracts available to all participants. OTC trading instead relies on individual broker-dealer relationships, which can mean more flexible terms but less standardisation across providers.

What Trades Over-the-Counter

Many forex transactions, certain bonds, and some derivatives are traded OTC, often because the products are customised or because the trading volume doesn’t justify a dedicated exchange listing. Forex in particular has historically operated this way, with no single central exchange handling all global currency trading.

OTC Markets Carry Their Own Considerations: What to Keep in Mind

As a precaution, OTC trading can involve less price transparency and counterparty considerations that don’t apply in the same way on a regulated exchange. Trading with a properly regulated provider helps address some, though not all, of these differences.

Trading Outside the Central Order Book

Over-the-counter markets give access to products and arrangements that wouldn’t otherwise be available through an exchange. Understanding how OTC trading differs structurally helps put any product traded this way into proper context.

⚠ Risk Warning:CFDs are complex financial instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Ensure you fully understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
