Initial margin Definition

What Is Initial Margin?

Initial margin is the minimum amount of money, or collateral, required to open a leveraged position. Rather than paying the full value of a trade upfront, a trader deposits a fraction of it, and this deposit is the initial margin. It allows traders to gain larger market exposure than their capital alone would permit, which is the basis of margin and leveraged trading.

How Initial Margin Works

The initial margin is usually expressed as a percentage of the position’s full value, determined by the leverage offered on an instrument. For example, a 5% margin requirement means a trader must deposit 5% of the total position value to open it. The remaining exposure is effectively provided through leverage.

Initial Versus Maintenance Margin

Margin Type Purpose
Initial margin Required to open a position
Maintenance margin Minimum equity required to keep it open

Why It Matters

Initial margin defines how much capital is tied up to open a trade and how much leverage is being used. A lower margin requirement means greater leverage, which increases both the potential return and the potential loss relative to the deposit. Understanding it is essential for managing account capital.

The Leverage Behind the Margin

Because initial margin allows traders to control a large position with a small deposit, leverage magnifies losses as well as gains. If the market moves against a position, losses can exceed the initial margin, and a margin call may require additional funds or the position may be closed. Trading on margin demands careful position sizing and risk management.

Margin as the Gateway to Leverage

Initial margin is the entry point to leveraged trading, defining how much capital is needed to take a position and how much exposure that capital controls. Understanding it clearly is fundamental to trading responsibly. VT Markets provides margin and leverage information across its instruments so traders can plan their positions with care.

Risk Warning:Trading CFDs involves significant risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Losses can exceed your initial deposit. Please ensure you fully understand the risks involved before trading.
