High-frequency trading (HFT) Definition

What Is High-Frequency Trading (HFT)?

High-frequency trading, or HFT, is a form of automated trading that uses powerful computers and algorithms to execute large numbers of orders at extremely high speeds, often in milliseconds or less. It is a subset of algorithmic trading where speed and volume are central. HFT firms aim to capture very small price differences across many trades, relying on technology rather than manual decision-making.

How High-Frequency Trading Works

HFT systems analyse market data and place orders far faster than any human could. To gain an edge, firms invest heavily in low-latency infrastructure, including high-speed connections and servers located close to exchange systems. Because individual profits per trade are tiny, the strategy depends on executing a very large number of trades.

Common HFT Approaches

  • Market making: continuously quoting buy and sell prices to capture the spread.

  • Arbitrage: exploiting brief price differences between related markets.

  • Latency-based strategies: reacting to new information faster than others.

HFT’s Role in the Market

Supporters argue that HFT adds liquidity and tightens spreads, which can benefit other participants. Critics point to concerns about fairness, the advantage held by the fastest players, and the potential for rapid, automated selling to amplify volatility during stressed conditions.

The Concerns Around HFT

High-frequency trading raises questions about market stability and access. The speed advantage requires resources well beyond the reach of most individual traders, and automated systems can contribute to sudden, sharp moves when many algorithms react at once. These dynamics are part of why HFT remains a closely watched and debated area of market structure.

Why HFT Matters to Traders

Even though high-frequency trading is the domain of specialised firms, understanding it helps individual traders make sense of the fast, liquid markets they operate in. Awareness of how automated activity can affect spreads and short-term volatility supports more realistic expectations. That context is valuable background for anyone trading on modern electronic platforms.
