Free float Definition

What Is Free Float?

Free float is the number of a company’s shares that are available for trading on the open market, excluding shares held by insiders and other restricted holders. It measures how many shares can actually change hands freely, rather than the total number of shares in existence. Free float is an important gauge of a stock’s liquidity and is often used in the construction of market indices.

What Free Float Excludes

The free float leaves out shares that are not readily available to ordinary investors. This typically includes shares held by company founders, directors, governments or other strategic holders, as well as shares subject to lock-up periods. What remains is the portion that trades freely in the market.

Why Free Float Matters

  • A higher free float generally supports greater liquidity

  • A low free float can lead to sharper price swings

  • Many indices weight companies by free-float market value

  • It affects how easily large orders can be filled

What a Low Free Float Can Mean

A stock with a small free float can be more volatile, because fewer available shares mean that buying or selling can move the price more sharply. Liquidity may be thinner, making it harder to enter or exit at a desired price. Traders often take free float into account when assessing how a stock is likely to behave.

The Role of Free Float

Free float gives a clearer picture of how many shares are genuinely tradable, which shapes liquidity and index weighting. Understanding it helps traders anticipate how easily a stock can be traded and how its price might move. Across VT Markets share CFDs, awareness of free float supports a more informed view of individual companies.

Risk Warning:Trading CFDs involves significant risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Losses can exceed your initial deposit. Please ensure you fully understand the risks involved before trading.
