Floor trader Definition

What Is a Floor Trader?

A floor trader is a trader who works on the floor of an exchange, executing trades on behalf of clients or for their own account. Traditionally, floor traders operated in the trading pits of exchanges, using open outcry, a system of shouting and hand signals, to buy and sell. The role has long been associated with the fast-paced image of stock and futures exchanges.

What a Floor Trader Does

Floor traders execute orders directly on the exchange, aiming to buy and sell at favourable prices. Some act as agents, filling orders for clients, while others trade their own capital to profit from short-term price movements. Their presence on the floor historically helped provide liquidity and keep markets moving.

How the Role Has Changed

With the rise of electronic trading, much of the activity once handled in trading pits now takes place through computer systems. Many exchanges have reduced or closed their physical floors, and a large share of trading is now conducted electronically. The floor trader role has narrowed as a result, though open outcry survives in some markets.

The Realities of Floor Trading

Floor trading, particularly for a trader’s own account, involves fast decisions and direct exposure to short-term price moves, which can produce losses as readily as gains. The shift to electronic markets has also changed the competitive landscape, with speed and technology playing a larger role. The environment demands discipline and quick judgement.

The Legacy of the Floor Trader

The floor trader represents a traditional model of market-making and execution that shaped how exchanges developed. Understanding the role offers useful context for how modern electronic markets came to be. Across today’s platforms, including those at VT Markets, the functions floor traders once performed are largely carried out electronically.
