USD/JPY was little changed on Tuesday, with the yen holding above 159.00 after the pair clawed back most of the intervention-led drop that had briefly strengthened Japan’s currency. The price action reflects renewed US dollar firmness and higher oil prices. On the charts, the pair traded at 159.24 and stayed above the 20-period SMA at 158.63, while the RSI sat around 61. Nearby support was flagged at 159.14 and 158.95, with a further level at 158.81, while resistance was seen at 159.40 and the 100-period SMA at 160.83.

Geopolitics also remained in focus after Iran’s Security Chief, Mohsen Rezai, set out conditions he said had been conveyed to the US through intermediaries, including ending the war and releasing blocked Iranian funds. He also said any Iran–Oman arrangement on Strait of Hormuz shipping would be separate from the question of closing the strait. Attention then shifts to Wednesday’s US CPI release, with July inflation expected to come in below June’s, a backdrop that could affect Fed rate-hike pricing.

Near-Term USD/JPY Bullish Strategies and Technical Outlook

We advise derivative traders to position for continued near-term strength in USD/JPY as the impact of recent Japanese government interventions quickly fades. Historical data from Japan’s massive 9.8 trillion yen intervention in 2024 proves that official market entries rarely reverse long-term macroeconomic trends permanently. With the pair holding firmly above technical support at 158.63, we recommend utilizing short-term call options targeting the 160.83 level.

Geopolitics, Oil, and Event Risk Considerations

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are adding fuel to this bullish trend, as Iran’s aggressive demands to the United States threaten to disrupt energy corridors. Higher crude oil prices historically weigh heavily on Japan’s net-importing economy, widening its trade deficit and further weakening the Yen. We suggest using barrier options to protect against sudden volatility spikes while riding this broader upward momentum.

The primary market catalyst is Wednesday’s US CPI release, where headline inflation is expected to cool slightly to 2.9%. While a softer inflation reading could temporarily temper Federal Reserve rate expectations, any US Dollar pullback is likely to be short-lived. We believe derivative traders should exploit any sudden dip by establishing long USD/JPY positions near the key support cluster at 159.14.

To capitalize on these converging factors, we favor utilizing bull call spreads to limit risk while capturing the upside toward 160.00. Implied volatility in USD/JPY options remains relatively stable, making premium purchases attractive ahead of the crucial inflation print. Keeping a close eye on the Strait of Hormuz is essential, as any physical disruption to shipping would instantly alter global risk dynamics.
