Warjiyo Resignation Stokes Rupiah Jitters as USD/IDR Hovers Near Historic Lows

Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Perry Warjiyo has resigned, adding to leadership turnover after former Finance Minister Sri Mulyani left in 2025 and leaving the rupiah (IDR) under pressure near historic lows against the US dollar (USD). Warjiyo, who had led BI since 2018, stepped down for personal reasons and will be replaced on an interim basis by Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti, while markets price the risk that policy continuity and institutional credibility could weaken.

The currency had already been tested earlier this year, when USD/IDR moved above 18,200, a level higher than during the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997. Drivers cited include a spike in global oil prices and concerns over BI independence, and there is also attention on the risk of an MSCI reclassification to frontier-market status. At the same time, higher fuel subsidy costs are seen as a potential strain that could push the fiscal deficit above the statutory ceiling of 3% of GDP. The successor decision now dominates near-term trading, with Damayanti viewed as offering continuity versus Deputy Governor Thomas Djiwandono, and USD/IDR remains supported.

Rupiah At Historic Lows Amid Leadership Uncertainty

We are closely watching the Indonesian Rupiah as it trades near historic lows, with USD/IDR recently breaking past the critical 18,200 level. This rate surpasses the previous record of 16,800 set during the 1998 Asian Financial Crisis, highlighting the severity of the current market pressure. The sudden resignation of Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo has heightened these fears, leaving the rupiah highly vulnerable in the near term.

Derivative Strategies For Navigating Market Volatility

For derivative traders, we recommend positioning for continued upward pressure on USD/IDR over the coming weeks. Buying short-term USD/IDR call options offers a defined-risk way to capture further spikes if political uncertainty deepens. We also suggest using one-month non-deliverable forwards (NDFs) to hedge existing Indonesian asset exposures against sudden capital outflows.

We must monitor the selection of the new central bank governor, as a political appointment like Thomas Djiwandono could trigger another sharp sell-off. Conversely, if interim Governor Destry Damayanti is permanently appointed, we may see a brief relief rally that cools the currency’s depreciation. Because of this binary risk, we favor long straddle strategies to profit from the expected spike in implied volatility.
