USD/JPY Consolidates Near 155.75 as NFP Looms and BoJ Hike Bets Support Yen

USD/JPY traded in a bearish consolidation in Friday’s Asian session, hovering around 155.75 and little changed on the day. The pair remained close to the August swing low, with traders focused on the US Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) release for direction on Federal Reserve policy after reduced pricing for a September hike. US bond yields fell after Fed Governor Christopher Waller said inflation shows signs of cooling, helping push the US dollar to an over one-week low and keeping the pair under pressure.

The yen was supported by a more hawkish repricing of Bank of Japan rate expectations and suspected intervention. Markets have fully priced a 25 basis point rise at the 17–18 September BoJ meeting, and also see the possibility of a follow-up move in December, after board member Hajime Takata called for a more nimble approach. Technically, the week’s failure to clear the 200-period simple moving average on the 4-hour chart leaves 155.25–155.20 as a key downside trigger, with a break opening 155.00 after a pullback from a four-decade high; a sustained move above the 200-period SMA and 160.00 would ease pressure.

Heightened Volatility on NFP and Trading Strategies

We should prepare for heightened volatility as the market faces a crucial US Nonfarm Payrolls release today, September 4, 2026. Recent options market data shows that the one-week implied volatility for USD/JPY has surged past 14%, reflecting deep uncertainty over the Federal Reserve’s next move. Derivative traders should look to exploit this pricing pressure by utilizing straddles or strangles to capture sharp breakouts from the current consolidation zone.

Jpy Outlook and Downside Playbook

We see the Japanese Yen strengthening significantly, bolstered by shifting expectations around the Bank of Japan’s monetary policy. Economists estimate a 70% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike at the upcoming September BoJ meeting, especially after recent hawkish remarks from policymakers. This narrowing interest rate differential between the US and Japan makes shorting USD/JPY via put options an attractive strategy for the coming weeks.

Historically, when USD/JPY breaks below key support levels like the recent swing low near 155.20, it triggers rapid algorithmic selling. During similar macro shifts in late 2024, breaking psychological thresholds sparked swift 3% to 4% downward moves within days. We recommend establishing bearish risk reversals, buying out-of-the-money puts while funding them by selling out-of-the-money calls, to leverage this potential downside momentum.
