US equity futures edge higher as oil and yields ease, ADP report points to cooling labour demand

Dow Jones futures rose 0.18% to about 53,220 in European trading on Thursday. S&P 500 futures added 0.16% to around 7,690, while Nasdaq 100 futures edged up 0.03% to roughly 29,200. US equity futures firmed as the recent rise in oil prices and bond yields paused, while economic releases pointed to softer labour demand. ADP data showed private-sector payrolls increased by 38,000 in August, below the 47,000 forecast.

Markets continue to price roughly a two-thirds chance of a Federal Reserve rate rise later this month, keeping attention on initial jobless claims and Friday’s nonfarm payrolls report. The move in futures followed a rebound on Wednesday that ended a three-session slide. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.56%, the S&P 500 rose 0.46% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.45%, with materials, communication services and health care leading. Within large-cap tech, the so-called Mag 7 rose 0.76%, as Nvidia advanced 3.21% and Meta gained 2.47%.

Relief Rally and Fed Rate Expectations

With US stock futures showing mild gains today on September 3, 2026—S&P 500 futures near 7,690 and Dow futures hovering near 53,220—we are seeing a brief relief rally as oil prices and bond yields take a breather. This stabilization follows a cooling ADP employment report which showed only 38,000 private-sector jobs added in August, missing the 47,000 forecast. Since the market is still pricing in a 66% chance of a Fed interest rate hike later this month, volatility is bound to spike.

Derivative Strategies and Sector Rotation

Given this rate uncertainty and the historical tendency for September to be the worst-performing month for equities with an average S&P 500 decline of 1.2%, we recommend derivative traders focus on protective put options. Buying near-the-money puts on the S&P 500 can hedge against sudden downside risk if Friday’s upcoming nonfarm payrolls report triggers a hawkish Fed response. Alternatively, we can utilize implied volatility strategies like long straddles to capture sharp moves regardless of market direction.

With mega-cap tech stocks like Nvidia and Meta recently driving the index recovery, option traders should watch for potential overextension in these crowded trades. We suggest using call spreads on tech heavyweights to limit risk while still participating in any continued short-term momentum. Balancing these with defensive plays in the materials and healthcare sectors can help us navigate the expected market turbulence over the coming weeks.
