UOB Sees Dollar Index Breaking Key Averages, Yet Trapped in 97.63–101.64 Range

UOB says the US Dollar Index has turned lower after failing to clear the weekly Ichimoku cloud and then dropping through the 55-week EMA, which it says has invalidated the prior bullish technical setup. In its 03 July 2026 update, when the index was at 101.39, the bank had pointed to a break above the cloud at 103.20 as the trigger for further upside, while warning that a move below 99.55/60—where the EMAs sat—would negate that view.

Despite the abrupt fall last week, UOB’s assessment is that the decline should remain range-bound because the EMAs are flat. It frames the trading band at 97.63 to 101.64, with the lower boundary aligned with May’s low and the base of the weekly cloud near 97.63, and the upper boundary matching last week’s high as well as the top of the weekly Ichimoku cloud at 101.64.

Technical Breakdown and Range Expectations

We are seeing a clear shift in the US Dollar Index (DXY) as it recently failed to break above the weekly Ichimoku cloud and tumbled below its 55-week exponential moving average. This sudden drop has wiped out the previous bullish setup, turning our outlook toward a distinct downside bias. However, because the longer-term moving averages remain flat, we expect the index to remain confined within a well-defined range of 97.63 to 101.64 in the coming weeks.

Trading Strategies and Risk Management

For derivative traders, this range-bound yet downward-tilted environment presents a prime opportunity to deploy range-trading strategies rather than chasing major breakouts. We recommend utilizing options strategies like iron condors or short strangle structures to capitalize on the expected containment between the 97.63 support and the 101.64 resistance. Selling call spreads near the 101.64 ceiling, which aligns with last week’s high, offers a high-probability setup given the strong overhead resistance.

This defensive posture is backed by recent macroeconomic data, with the Federal Reserve’s ongoing policy adjustment cycle keeping Treasury yields capped and weighing on the greenback. Historically, when the DXY trades below its 55-week EMA while EMAs flatten, volatility tends to compress, similar to the range-bound behavior seen during previous mid-cycle pauses. Current CFTC data shows speculative net-long dollar contracts have dropped significantly, reinforcing this bearish tilt within our boundaries.

We should focus on buying protective puts or executing bear put spreads on rallies close to the 101.00 level to target the lower end of the range near 97.63. Conversely, if the index dips toward the May low of 97.63, we should look to take profits on short positions and potentially sell out-of-the-money puts. Managing risk tightly around these boundary lines will be crucial as the market digests upcoming inflation data and central bank commentary.
