Treasury yields slide post-Bessent as oil drops, dollar softens before PCE, auctions and Warsh speech

Long-dated US Treasury yields are around 10-15bp lower a week after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s market intervention, with an 8% fall in oil prices since last week easing pressure on rates and supporting risk assets as the dollar softens. The next checkpoint is US PCE inflation data today, followed by a $44bn 7-year note auction tomorrow and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech on Friday. Lower yields have reduced interest-rate volatility, which has spilled into calmer FX and equity markets, while the Australian dollar was lifted after July CPI surprised to the upside, raising the chance of a Reserve Bank of Australia hike in November; DXY is seen capped around 99.00/10 with recent lows near 98.60.

In Europe, upbeat Eurozone data have reinforced expectations for a 25bp ECB move to 2.50% in September, with another 25bp still priced for early next year; EUR/USD support is flagged at 1.1650/60 and resistance around 1.1700/1710. Hungary’s central bank cut by 25bp to 5.50%, with year-end forecasts placing EUR/HUF at 3.50 versus 3.60 now, and 10-year Hungarian yields at 4.75% against 5.43%. In China, USD/CNH is consolidating as the PBoC slows the pace of lower USD/CNY fixings, while the base case remains USD/CNY edging towards 6.70 in coming months.

Interest Rate and Currency Derivative Strategies

We recommend that derivative traders take advantage of the recent 10 to 15 basis point drop in long-end US Treasury yields by positioning for compressed interest rate volatility. With Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s market interventions and an 8% drop in global crude oil prices, interest rate options are pricing in significantly less risk. Traders should consider selling short-dated straddles on Treasury futures ahead of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s upcoming Jackson Hole address.

In the currency markets, we favor buying short-term put options on the US Dollar Index targeting a decline to 98.60, as long as DXY remains capped below 99.10. At the same time, EUR/USD call options look attractive targeting the 1.1700 level, especially with the Eurozone showing economic resilience and ECB officials hinting at upside growth risks. Historically, similar periods of declining energy costs have boosted the Euro by easing heavy manufacturing pressures across the bloc.

The Australian dollar remains a prime target for carry trade derivative strategies after July inflation data unexpectedly ticked upward, raising the odds of a November rate hike. We suggest utilizing risk reversals to capture further AUD upside while hedging against sudden shifts in global risk sentiment. High-yielding currencies are gaining clear momentum as global volatility indexes, like the VIX, hover near quiet summer lows below 13.

Equity and Emerging Market Derivative Opportunities

With Nvidia’s crucial Q2 earnings report releasing after the close today, equity derivative traders should prepare for a major volatility crush. Implied volatility for near-term contracts is highly elevated, making option-selling strategies like iron condors attractive for premium collection. Historically, Nvidia’s post-earnings moves dictate broader tech sector momentum, so purchasing out-of-the-money protective puts on tech indexes could safeguard broader portfolios.

For emerging markets, we see opportunity in the Hungarian Forint by entering receiver swaps on ten-year government bonds as yields look poised to fall from 5.43% toward 4.75%. Meanwhile, in Asia, we suggest using conservative USD/CNH put spreads to play a gradual drift down toward the 6.70 level. While the Chinese central bank has slowed the renminbi’s appreciation pace, broader dollar weakness should keep the downward pressure intact over the coming weeks.
