Sempra Energy is advancing its ECA LNG Phase 1 and Port Arthur LNG Phase 1 projects to meet growing global LNG demand. The company is also increasing investments in transmission and distribution infrastructure as capital expenditure is expected to rise by about 30% from 2026 to 2029.

Sempra is broadening its renewable energy portfolio, focusing on wind, solar, and rooftop solar. This expansion is aimed at leveraging economic benefits and incentives in the renewable market.

Challenges Faced by the Company

The company faces challenges due to the risk of wildfires in California, which can cause outages and infrastructure damage. Sempra Infrastructure also encounters risks from partnerships with Mexican enterprises such as PEMEX and CFE, which involve financial stability and regulatory considerations.

Sempra Energy’s shares have increased by 17.8% over the past six months, compared to the industry growth of 12.4%. Other potential stocks from the same sector include One Gas, Inc., Avista Corporation, and Brookfield Infrastructure Corporation, all with favourable Zacks Ranks.

These firms show promising earnings growth rates and substantial increases in earnings per share. For example, Brookfield Infrastructure’s 2026 EPS is projected to see a significant rise of 384.6%.

Given Sempra’s ongoing progress on its major LNG projects, we should view the company’s long-term outlook as positive. U.S. LNG exports hit a new record in December 2025, reaching nearly 14.5 billion cubic feet per day, confirming the strong global demand Sempra is positioned to meet. This trend supports a bullish thesis on the stock as these large-scale projects move closer to generating revenue.

Investment Strategies in the LNG Market

The company’s plan for significant capital spending on transmission infrastructure appears well-timed. The International Energy Agency recently projected that electricity demand from data centers is set to double by 2028, a trend that directly benefits regulated utilities with major upgrade plans. This provides a stable, regulated earnings base to complement the more volatile LNG market.

From a derivatives perspective, the stock’s 17.8% rise in the latter half of 2025 shows strong momentum, but we must consider if that trend can continue. One of the main overhangs, California wildfire risk, was less severe than feared in late 2025, with CAL FIRE data showing acreage burned in the fourth quarter was 40% below the five-year average. This may have reduced the implied volatility in Sempra’s options, potentially making bullish strategies more affordable.

Considering this, we could look at buying call options to bet on further upside, focusing on expirations beyond the next earnings report, such as the March or April 2026 contracts. This strategy would allow us to capture any positive surprises related to project timelines or capital expenditure updates. A more risk-defined approach would be a bull call spread, where we buy a call and simultaneously sell a higher-strike call to finance a portion of the cost.

However, the risks associated with Sempra’s Mexican state-owned partners, PEMEX and CFE, remain a valid concern that could surprise the market. To protect against a sudden downturn, we could purchase out-of-the-money put options with near-term expirations. This acts as a low-cost insurance policy against any unexpected negative headlines from Mexico or a sudden flare-up of wildfire activity.

By comparing Sempra’s implied volatility to that of peers like Avista, we can gauge if the market is accurately pricing its unique combination of stable utility growth and high-potential LNG ventures. If Sempra’s volatility seems unusually low given its growth catalysts, it would reinforce the case for initiating bullish option positions. This relative value analysis helps confirm whether Sempra’s options are attractively priced right now.
