Sterling slips versus yen as Bank of Japan rate-hike bets intensify, UK data awaited

Sterling eased against the yen in European trade on Friday as the Japanese currency outperformed on expectations the Bank of Japan could raise rates at its September meeting. Reuters cited three sources saying the BoJ may move as soon as September and could tighten more aggressively than the current cadence of roughly twice a year. The BoJ’s July Summary of Opinions showed a majority of board members favoured an upward policy path after holding rates at 1%.

Markets are also watching for guidance from Japan’s Ministry of Finance on any further US-Japan joint intervention to curb excessive currency volatility, after coordinated action in late July supported the yen. In the UK, attention shifts to labour market data for the three months to June and July Consumer Price Index figures due next week, as traders assess the Bank of England’s strategy. Current pricing implies no near-term BoE hike, while the policy framework targets headline CPI inflation around 2%, and the Bank Rate is referenced at 3.75% through 2026 under unchanged energy prices.

Recommendations For Trading GBP/JPY Amid Policy Divergence

We recommend that derivative traders position themselves for a weaker GBP/JPY over the coming weeks by utilizing bear put spreads or shorting futures. This bearish bias is driven by the growing policy divergence between a hawkish Bank of Japan and a cooling UK economy. Historically, when the interest rate differential between these two central banks narrows, this currency cross experiences sharp downward corrections.

The Bank of Japan’s interest rate, currently at 1.0%, is highly likely to rise in September, with policymakers signaling more aggressive hikes ahead. We should look back at the dramatic Yen short-squeeze in August 2024, which triggered a massive unwind and sent the GBP/JPY tumbling by over 10% in just a few weeks, as a template for how quickly this pair can fall. Given that the Ministry of Finance remains ready to intervene to support the Yen, buying out-of-the-money GBP/JPY put options offers an attractive risk-reward profile.

UK Macro Outlook And Risk-Defined Hedging Strategies

On the British side, we expect the Pound to face steady downward pressure as the Bank of England keeps its Bank Rate steady at 3.75% for the rest of 2026. Recent economic data shows that UK wage growth is cooling and labor market slack is rising, which severely limits the potential for any hawkish surprises. By utilizing option strategies rather than spot trading, we can capitalize on this stagnating UK outlook while defining our maximum risk against sudden market volatility.
