Sterling rose about 0.70% against the US dollar, trading near 1.3400 after opening around 1.3300, as firmer UK labour data and reports of US–Iran diplomatic progress drove dollar selling. Israel’s Channel 12 News said a proposal presented by Pakistan’s army chief to senior Iranian officials had already been approved by the US and received preliminary agreement from Tehran. The report added that Qatar would unfreeze and transfer $6bn to Iran, while Tehran would allow a secret International Atomic Energy Agency visit to nuclear facilities. The US Dollar Index fell 0.32% to 101.66, and US pending home sales dropped 7.3% to a record low in September.

In the UK, the workforce increased by 102K in the three months to August, up from 67K previously, while the unemployment rate fell and Average Earnings Including Bonus dipped. Money markets priced a Bank of England rate rise at the November meeting with odds at 93%. Technically, GBP/USD was at 1.3375, with 50-, 100- and 200-day SMA resistance clustered near 1.3411 and trend-line resistance around 1.3407; RSI (14) stood at 56.3. Key levels cited were resistance at 1.3616 and 1.3801, and support at 1.3273.

GBP/USD Derivative Trading Strategy

We recommend derivative traders approach the GBP/USD rally with calculated caution near the crucial 1.3407 to 1.3411 resistance cluster. Historically, when key moving averages converge alongside a descending trend line, false breakouts frequently occur without additional macro momentum. Traders seeking upside exposure should wait for a daily close above 1.3411 before deploying bullish call options or long futures targeting 1.3616.

Money markets currently price in a 93% chance of a Bank of England rate hike in November following the impressive 102,000 UK job gain. Historically, when rate hike expectations cross the 90% threshold, spot currency gains often stall unless incoming inflation metrics significantly beat forecasts. We suggest utilizing volatility strategies like straddles ahead of the upcoming UK inflation and retail sales data to capture sharp price movements.

US Dollar Weakness and Risk Management

Geopolitical progress between the US and Iran has driven the US Dollar Index down to 101.66 amid broader risk-on sentiment. Coupled with US pending home sales plunging 7.3% to record lows—a drop reminiscent of past real estate slowdowns—the Dollar faces persistent headwind. We advise considering downside option strategies on the Dollar, while keeping tight risk limits in place for sudden geopolitical headlines.

Should GBP/USD fail to break above the 1.3411 ceiling, we anticipate a retracement back toward the technical support level near 1.3273. Derivative traders entering downside positions ought to place protective stops just above 1.3415 to manage risk efficiently. Monitoring incoming US initial jobless claims will be critical for gauging whether Dollar weakness will extend through the coming weeks.
