The Indian rupee traded largely unchanged near 95.33 per US dollar in Tuesday’s opening session, with markets waiting for the Reserve Bank of India’s policy decision due on Wednesday. The repo rate is expected to remain at 5.25%, with the next release scheduled for Wed Aug 05, 2026 at 04:30, and both the consensus and previous reading at 5.25%. June CPI inflation rose 4.4% year on year, remaining within the RBI’s 2–6% target band, while commodity prices and a weaker monsoon were referenced as upside risks.

Oil prices firmed as attention stayed on US-Iran talks, and the MCX Crude Oil contract expiring on August 19 was up 1.3% near Rs. 7,745, a move that can be a headwind for an import-dependent economy. The dollar held Monday’s gains ahead of June JOLTS Job Openings at 14:00 GMT, expected at 7.45 million versus 7.594 million in May, while the Dollar Index traded near 100.00. In USD/INR, spot remained below the 20-day EMA at 95.7234, with RSI (14) at 44.18; resistance sits at 95.72 and 96.00, while support is seen at 94.80 and 94.21.

Derivative Trading Strategies Around RBI Policy Decision

With the Reserve Bank of India widely expected to hold the repo rate steady at 5.25% tomorrow, we recommend derivative traders employ range-bound strategies like short straddles or iron condors. Historically, India’s retail inflation has stayed comfortably within the RBI’s 2% to 6% target band, which reduces the likelihood of sudden monetary surprises. This policy stability should keep the USD/INR pair trading sideways in the extremely near term, making option premium collection strategies ideal.

From a technical standpoint, we favor buying USD/INR put options or shorting futures as long as the pair remains capped below the 20-day exponential moving average of 95.72. The momentum indicator suggests weakening bullish strength, which could push the pair down toward key support at 94.80. If this support level breaks, we could see further downside targeting the June low near 94.21.

Macro Risks: Oil, Dollar Strength, and Hedging Measures

Because India imports over 80% of its crude oil, we must closely monitor the volatile US-Iran negotiations and MCX crude prices currently trading near Rs. 7,745. Any sudden spike in oil prices historically widens India’s trade deficit, which has frequently averaged over $20 billion monthly, and puts heavy pressure on the rupee. To hedge this risk, we advise holding long call options on MCX crude contracts alongside your short USD/INR positions.

We also suggest keeping a close eye on the US Dollar Index as it hovers around the critical 100.00 mark ahead of upcoming US JOLTS and Nonfarm Payrolls data. Stronger US jobs data could quickly reverse the rupee’s recent strength and push the USD/INR back toward the 96.00 resistance level. Derivative traders should set tight stop-loss orders on all short-dollar positions to protect against sudden market swings driven by these American labor reports.
