The rupee eased against the dollar on Friday as markets waited for US Nonfarm Payrolls for July, due at 06:00 PM IST (12:30 GMT), with USD/INR trading near 95.27. Caution followed softer July ADP Employment Change data of 44k versus 50k from TD Securities and a 65k consensus. Payrolls are forecast at 80K, compared with 57K in June, while the unemployment rate is seen holding at 4.2%. Average hourly earnings are expected at 0.3% month on month and 3.5% year on year, and the CME FedWatch tool prices a 54.5% chance of a Fed rate rise in September.

Oil prices rebounded after a sharp two-week fall, lifting sensitivity for import-dependent currencies. The MCX crude contract expiring 19 August was up 1.13% at about Rs. 7,460, as tensions between Iran-aligned Houthis and Saudi Arabia raised supply-risk concerns despite a temporary Iran-US ceasefire. In technical terms, USD/INR remains below the 20-day exponential moving average at 95.57, with the RSI at 44.6; support sits at 94.83 and 94.15.

Trading Strategies And Technical Outlook

We advise derivative traders to closely watch the 95.57 level on USD/INR, which represents the critical 20-day exponential moving average. If today’s US payroll data exceeds expectations and pushes the pair above this resistance, entering long futures positions could yield quick gains. Conversely, a failure to break this barrier warrants buying near-the-money put options to target the immediate support level at 94.83.

With the market currently pricing in a 54.5% chance of a September rate hike, the upcoming hourly earnings data will likely trigger sharp currency fluctuations. Historically, even a minor 0.1% deviation from expected wage growth can cause a 0.5% intraday swing in emerging market currencies like the rupee. To capitalize on this impending volatility without taking directional risk, we recommend deploying a long straddle option strategy expiring in late August.

Oil Market Volatility And Risk Management

Escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have pushed MCX Crude back to around Rs. 7,460, threatening India’s import bills. Research shows that every 10% rise in crude oil prices typically widens India’s current account deficit by about 0.5% of GDP, which naturally depreciates the rupee. We suggest hedging long rupee exposures by purchasing call options on MCX crude oil futures to buffer against further energy supply disruptions.
